Mike- Is there any particular likeness(es) that you've found difficult to capture? Based on what I've seen of your works, you always deliver... I'm just curious if you have a harder time with some than others. Thanks!-Cyberpunk12
I think all likeness are difficult. I think Bela is a hard one to capture. Never see one that really captures him.Because faces like Bela,Ringo Starr and people like that have such strong features its easy to carry it into charicature.
Also scale has a lot to do with it as well.
Let me think on it...

Mike, do you have a frustration story? A sculpt that has completely stumped you to the point that you just abandoned the piece unfinished?
For someone of your caliber, its hard to believe this at all. Cyberpunk12 said it perfectly, "you always deliver."
Have you ever NOT delivered?

I cant rememer that happening. Like I said Bela is tough.I also did a 1/8 Ripley that was trickey.
I'll be honest it never really comes easy,I just keep persevering.
AND I'm never happy.I just give it my best shot.
Actually I do remember a piece that I couldnt get right-Bruce Lee.But that was approx 16 years ago.

I'm also curious, if you had any difficulty on a particular likeness. I have seen your works in the gallery in your website and they're all awesome!

Actually Ive already stated before that Paqhet and Bergoltz are two of my favourites. They each have a particular niche that others inc myself couldnt even try to emulate.
Bob Causey is my biggest rival in the stuff I do.
Just kidding,Bob and I actually talk regulary about projects and techniqhes. He is an incredible artist and one of my best friends.
Love Bowens style, again hes in a league of his own in his particulary niche.
I could actually list dozens of sculptors.
Its not necessarily just sculptors whos work inspires.
More influences include Rick Baker,Alex Ross and John Bolton.

Well Bela is my priority.
I'm planning an over-sized piece. And a couple of characters I dont really want to mention at the moment.
Theres a lot of stuff I would like for myself but I highly doubt others would be interested!!!!
EXAMPLE. As a kid I really loved the movie EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE,mainly because of the motor Cycle gang THE BLACK WIDOWS.So Im makng the lead Bikers head. Nobody knows him and your'e probable thinking "What the...?" but its nostalgic for me.
And Bob Causey wants one also!
Any ideas are welcome.

I liked doing the series. Cant understand why the folks who picked up the line didnt go with me.Oh well.

I've another question. Not related directly to your work, but to sculptors in general.
Are common "bases" available from a company...or are they just sculpted as well as the subject material?
I'm looking for around 20 bases for various statues, but I'd like them to all match (square, stepped, black), instead of the misc. ones they are on.
Is there a company that can provide these in various sizes.....or is this another piece that the sculptor must make?

Good question, probably a Pierce Brosnan I did.
Its probably been replaced now by an updated, better version.
which brings me to another point.I read a lot on these forums and the net about "this bust being better than than bust,or this being a better likeness than that one".
A lot of these things are about timing. If I chose to do a head today of say ..Tobey Maguire ,it has nothing to be compared to so its just a work of art.
But if the next sculptor comes along and decides to do one he now has a level to compare,to surpass. It will inevitably be a tighter rendition because now he knows he will be judged(of course thats assuming they are both on the same skill level). He now has the advantage plus hes seen the other guys piece, which means additional reference.
So when a new version comes along ,assuming its on a commercial basis, it SHOULD be an improvement.if it aint, then why bother?
Also I dont usually keep rehashing the same character over and over to get it 100%,when Ive done it,its done. I usually see things I could improve but thats what makes an artist. i prefer to move on or else I would go insane.

Regarding photos, I take what I can get.Obviously they need to relate to the expression you are doing.
No I dont take proportions, not if you mean measuring them.I do it by eye.
It helps if you try and make some of the pics the same scale as your sculpt.

Mike,
I know you used to sculpt a lot of figure kits (I have a bunch of your kits). Your focus now is likenesses and more particularly 1:1 busts. Do you have a preference for one over the other?
Do you try to give your own "take" on a piece, or do you just try and replicate the character as precisely as possible? I know your pieces ultimately have a "feel" to them. I can recognize one of your pieces instantly. But is that intentional?
Have you considered doing 1:1 busts that incorporate more of the chest/shoulders of the character (much like the old Greek busts)?

No it isnt intentional, but you are right. If you blanked my mind I could tell you which was my piece.
I sculpted a HULK yesterday for my Portraits line. I followed nobody elses version, didnt look at a scrap of reference and you can tell its one of mine.
I had fun because i wasnt tryin to copy anything.Do i feel its the best interpretation of the Hulk? No way. Its just A version, but i felt it when I was sculpting.
And nobody can say its wrong. they can say they dont like it but they cant say its wrong.Which is refreshing.

I'd love to see your own articulation of a character like the hulk or thor. No doubt the DF pieces have as much you in them as they have Ross. Ross has never really had a definitive take on Marvel characters (apart from Spidey). That being said, you would have still been somewhat constrained by the concept art.
Your pieces have an "art" flavour to them. They are not just "realistic". They are more. Making something "live" is more than replicating it with precision. That's what you do. Your work seems to give the character a soul. It captures a character at a moment in time. The lines are softer than most other portrait sculptors. More subtle. I expect that's what sets your work apart.
It's much like Randy Bowen's work with its uniqueness in style. It's a signature style. But nothing too obvious or articulable. That's a very good thing. If it's articulable, it can be copied.

any advice on getting your name out there? aside from having a portfolio in line and the talent to do the job, what's the best way to pursue the dream? do you just kind of say "hey guys check this out."? and send in some work. or do THEY usually come to YOU.
Also, I know everyone is different preference wise when it comes to tools but I was wondering if you might have a picture or 5-10 or more tools you can't live without for sculpting.

1. To start off my biggest question... how'd you learn your anatomy?
2. why do you prefer wed clay?
3. when starting a sculpt do you start with a profile or do you begin working it in the round?
4. how do you get your sculpts so smooth... like your wonderful bela lugosi sculpt you just posted pics of.
5. and lastly... i am aware my questions never end...but i just have to know...are you a scraper or an adder when you sculpt?
hope you don't mind answering all these questions... i may be taking advantage of the title of this post :D ,

hope you don't mind answering all these questions... i may be taking advantage of the title of this post :D ,
thanks for anything you can offer,

1) Boring but..just by looking, drawing superheroes as a kid. I still have to look at images when it involves intricate muscles.
2) Well I prefer it for large scale. Cheap and quick but it has its disadvantages also.
3) I start with the whole thing, mainly the face.
4) Thanks.Brushes and sponges.
5)I think you could call me an adder...til I add too much, then I'm a scraper:)

Hey Mike,
any advice on getting your name out there? aside from having a portfolio in line and the talent to do the job, what's the best way to pursue the dream? do you just kind of say "hey guys check this out."? and send in some work. or do THEY usually come to YOU.
Also, I know everyone is different preference wise when it comes to tools but I was wondering if you might have a picture or 5-10 or more tools you can't live without for sculpting.
thanks for your time and all the inspiration that you have given us fellow sculptors.
ENC, well you have the best tool right in front of you,the internet. In my day..:( ..we had send out pictures and portfolios.
I still have to find work some of the time.
My advice is do one killer, kick ass piece rather than too many bland ones.
I dont have 5 tools! I use a dental tool, two loops and a large scraper.

Best post I've read in a long time!....
First of all, I want to say that You are a fantastic sculptor. Someone may sculpt a tighter interpretation of a figure, but that does not make it better. The current trend of hyper detailing (skin pores etc..) is a result of this hobbies obsession with modeling details. Modeling and sculpting are very different.
Absolute realism is a copy of nature and can be accomplished by any number of talented modelors. Anything can be measured and duplicated if given enough time and man hours. Good representational sculpting (art) is bringing to light the hidden life in the subject. It is dynamic and original and should show the viewer something beyond what they can observe in the natural world. Mike, you can do it all in my opinion!
I recently attended an exhibition of Ron Muecks work. He is actually a whole team of accomplished modelors doing the same thing that many other less self promoting artists have been doing for decades. The reaction to the work is the same as one would hear in a wax museum, " it looks so real" or "now that's really creepy"! This kind of modeling draws all the attention to the process in a "how did they do that"? kind of way, but never resonates as a work of inspiration. Please dont get me wrong...it is amazing and requires very talented detail oriented craftsmen to achieve.
Art however, turned the corner with a single portrait...Rodins Balzac...and has never looked back. He accomplished more with less than seemingly anyone else had ever done before. What few people know is that Rodin was actually knocking off an unknown contemporary of his...a young genius named Medardo Rosso.
Please Google his name and check out what I think are some of the most powerful works of portraiture ever created. Art history is just catching up with him and his impact on Rodin and by extension all figurative art since. I am sure most statue collectors would be quick to dismiss this work as unfinished.
Anyway, bravo to you Mike and all of your amazing work!

Thanks for the kind words and as for the rest of your post...
Couldnt of said it better myself!
I have several pieces that I was sculpting as collectable kits and busts that I just didnt finish. The reason being I already had the likeness ,expression and movement and couldnt bring myself to work on the shoes laces and details etc,my artistic hunger had been fed by that point.
I think model kits are the hardest thing to sculpt. Because the modeller picks up every individual piece, and examines it very closely.
If a prepaint or a finished bust falls short(in the sculpt) its harder to see because you are looking at the whole, not individual pieces.

Mike Hill

Hey Mike, any word on when the article of the Joker bust you did will be out?
I'm afraid that likely isn't happening. I prepared it but the Ledger Joker quickly became over-saturated.
Only 5 days ago I was asked for a brand new version. I was tempted now that I have actual reference this time around(!) but there are plenty of other Ledger Jokers for the client to choose from.
I have never been one to keep rehashing a character, there aren't enough clients to warrant 10 different Jokers, regardless of how well each is done.
I did mine on an artistic whim and enjoyed doing it and am proud of it. Is it perfect? nah but when I started it, it came from the heart - not for kudos or financial gain. Once other people make the same character it becomes a case of comparison and to some a competition.
Doing a new version would of seemingly put me in that arena.
I have more respect for fellow artists and am far too busy than to try to outdo others.
I'm past that stuff.
Of course there are only so many characters and its only natural that artists will do thier own take. I guess its all down to timing and respect.
I used to be very involved in the garage kit field and it was the same then.If I heard Geometric were doing a Predator then of course I would steer clear for a while.
I remember I had a GREAT friend who was also a kit sculptor.I know he was a fan of the Wolfman and I was pumped to do one.I called him and asked if he was doing one he said he considered it down the road but wouldnt bother if I did one. So I did it, and I continued talking with him everyday. Then out of the blue I read online that he is doing one,I call him,we discuss it, he then sends me an email (which I still have) saying he apologised and admitted it would be a crappy thing to do.I told him that very courteous of him. Then out of the blue he puts one on line with not even the decency to tell me he was doing it and HAD been doing it for weeks. So of course then you have less potential customers.I called him but he didnt even call back or write his reasons. To be honest I wouldnt of cared if only he had been upfront. I'm still baffled. He was good friend.
I apologise for the rant...I'm waiting for eyes to cure up and got carried away!

Thanks and keep up the beautiful work!

Vadar...soon as Im done on Wolfman..U will be recieving more than pics;)
Ultramanimator,
For Bela I would prob just alter a mannequin. More specificand/or extreme poses need a full sculpt though, which is most of the time less hassle that cutting an altering a mannequin

List. - Things i can't wait to see. - 1. "The Wolfman" movie remake 2. Mike Hill's Face 2 Face dvd (series?) 3. World Peace. Common denominator - Mike Hill ...... Ok, well ... two out of three ain't bad ( and World Peace might be kind of boring after a while! ). Can't wait to see what you have in store Mike !!!

Here's a question for you Mike. When you are sculpting a portrait of an actor in a charcter role (i.e Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster) do you sculpt a representation including flaws (if any) or limitations in the makeup application ? Or do you sculpt your likeness remaining true to the makeup artists intentions, I guess in effect correcting those imperfections - sculpting the character as opposed to sculpting the actor in makeup? Something i always wondered about ( incidently, the Karloff/Frankenstein reference was only an example - Jack Pierce developed a makeup that transcended any limitations of time and material, in my opinion !). Thanks - Tom

Hi Tom,Thats a great question.Its a very fine line.
On the whole I will use the imperfections of the makeup,if it can be disguised as looking cool. Are we making an actor in makeup or a real monster?
As you said, the original make up artist didnt want those imperfections but they have become part of history so I do try and use them ,although a little discreetly.
Hope that makes sense?

I dont have Chris Reeve on the cards sorry.
Mr Reeve has been covered a LOT and is still being covered.
I was actually offered a commision recently.Im not one to step on toes, so I turned it down.
Love the character though!

I think that's a good decision. There's way too many Chris Reeve's in the works already. Howard S. has done one, Bob Causey is doing one. The cinemaquette one is coming out. :) There's even that other one that was sculpted in Europe that is very good (Cap70 has it I think).
While I obviously love the Reeve superman, I've always loved your Ross version too. That is a fantastic work of art.

I have to agree with you Vader about the Ross Superman - Mike did an amazing job ! Here's hoping Version 2 is a possibility! Mike - any chance of a del Toro "Wolfman" in the future ? Gotta say I love the design/concept that Rick Baker came up with and I can't wait to see it on the screen ! All the best! - Tom

Hi Mike...... Just saw some pics from Monsterpallooza '09 and wanted to say that i loved the new version of the Heath Ledger Joker ( and of course the Karloff Frankenstein(s))! Also, I read somewhere ( the Resin Barbarian interview, i think? ) that an exhibition of your work might be in the works somewhere down the road ? Hope so, I'd love to see it (or a book showcasing some of your sculptures - garage kits and full sized sculpts.... that would definitely be sitting on my shelf!! )! At any rate, all the best ! -Tom
