Just picked up Marvel Monsterworks on e-bay.

The thread about Kirby's monsters got me thinking how much I enjoyed looking and reading about them.

Here's the book if u can find it:

Hah! I was looking at that book earlier. Excellent choice!

I would love to have one to keep, but every copy I find is beat to heck. It's on my list of wants.

I just punched it into e-bay and there was one copy for sale for 25 bucks. Didn't know it was hard to find. I'm a lucky dude.

The book is gorgeous, a real showcase for Kirby and Ditko's art prior to the "Marvel Age" explosion. I snatched up a NM copy on eBay a couple years back for under $20, I highly recommend this book!

Yes, that looks great. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

TPB I believe.

As far as I know, it was only published in a trade format. It definitely needs to be reprinted. Or... ESSENTIAL FOR-MAAAAAAAAT!!! :)

I am not a fan of the Essential books. Can't get over the black and white pages.

I like the Essentials book only for collected stuff that you can't get any other way. The ones I own now are all the Tomb of Dracula and Monster of Frankenstein, plus some Spider-Man and Captain America issues the Masterworks haven't caught up with yet. Other than that, I agree with Furie. Can't beat the price/content ratio, though, for a substantial quick Marvel hit.

wk -- with all the books you own when do you find the time to read Essentials?

U madman!

I'm a nutcase, for sure! Just picked up the Monster Masterworks on Amazon's used bookstore (VG condition, too!). This thread inspired me.

Sometimes, I agree. You know, if they colored that paper, it'd look just like old weathered comics. That would be an extra dash of cool, in a nostalgic sense. But I'll take what I can get.

You gotta admit, the reprints of Gene Colan's TOD work look even better in black and white.

Yes, and I own that one and the Power-Man one too.

The Gene Colan B&W reprints DO look really good. It's a real plus that Tom Palmer, inker extaordinaire, was Gene's inker throughout that whole series. His inks are incredible and he's the only one who could have done Colan's pencils justice like that.

I own all three ToD Essentials and I believe the fourth and last one is being published soon, too!

This thread got my interest up for this book. Just found it at AddAll.com (book search engine):

Found and bought a copy right now for $10.00! Looking forward to this one.

I just finished reading this. What a great book! These stories are just so much fun. Like a cross between all those wild 1950s/60s sci fi horror movies and Rod Serling's Twighlight Zone.

As much as I love Kirby's art in this (yeah, Ditko's there too but these are mostly Kirby beauties), Stan's stories are killer. For stories as short as they are there are some crazy plot twists that put you on your ear and a big smile on your face.

Classic, wonderful pre-Marvel Age stories. Thanks, Furie, for the tip. I'd been looking for this for years under the misnomer of "Marvel Monsterworks." It wasn't 'til your link that I searched under the correct name and got my now cherished copy!

Actually haven't started the Dracula Essentials. Took a couple of sittings to read through a Spidey or other Essentials, though.

I noticed that Tomb of Dracula Essentials vol 4 (final volume) goes on sale this Weds! "Count" me in (sorry, corny I know, but I caught the pun after I'd written it so it originally wasn't even intentional).

I tore through the first volume of Essential TOD. 2 and 3 were much slower - after a while, those stories tend to drag. But I'll be picking up Volume 4 this week!

As for those "monster comics": come on, Marvel! Essential-ize!

Monster of Frankenstein's already got its own Essentials. The rest are so obvious. Yes, Marvel, let's do it!!

I have been lobbying for years to get Marvel to do a hardcover of the 10-cent Monster Books, along with everyone else on the Marvel Masterwork forum. wktf, the TPB is nice but think of a 150 page hard-cover for your library with about 25 stories! That would be fantastic.

Then, maybe some day, we'll get a Sci-Fi one, a Space one, and a Strange-Stories one. Plenty of Kirby and Ditko.

Marvel should really do it - it would sell!

In case you have a moment, here's a very cool site if you like the Kirby Monster stuff . . .

Silver, I agree! That 150 pg HC would be one of the prizes of my library (of course, I've already run out of room and just commissioned a new room with new shelves, natch, for my library)!
