As some of you know, my soon-to-be 16 year old son is a member of this fine establishment, with the forum name of Great Destroyer. This past year was a little rough for him, health wise. Nothing serious but he kept getting strep throat and sick in general, missing about 16 days of school. His tonsils swelled up to the size of golf balls, giving him all kinds of other problems like being able to breathe while he slept, and this past Monday at a doctor's strong recommendation he had them removed. Now, for a small child this isn't such a big deal. But this kid is about 5' 11" and 165lbs. The surgeon told us we'd have a very difficult two week recovery period. Now that we're on day 5 I have to say this kid's suffered some pretty tremendous pain and he's got more in store for him over the next week or so. A tonsillectomy certainly is not a big deal compared to other far more serious problems and procedures. Still, the kid's in real pain and your kind thoughts and good wishes for his recovery whether here or a PM (which would surprise and delight him when he's back on his feet and back on the forum), I'm sure, will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

as a doctor and anaesthetist/pain specialist - i can tell you that tonsils are a bother but also having them BURN out of the back of your throat,a very sensitive part of your body, for a tonsillectomy is a killer! imagine having to swallow, drink or cough - OUCH

very common procedure and very painful - seen usually in teens and it is a fact that young people need more analgesia and as we get older we need less for comparable operations.

all the best over the next few day mate and make sure you keep up with your pain relief and fluids - it will eventually get better - and from the sounds of things in the long run a much needed op.

stay strong and hope to hear of your recovery on the boards:thumbs2:

Just like the old Mad Comics:
Sung to the Platters: The Great Pretender.

Oh yes, I'm the Great Destroyer
Destoying that I do well
My need is such; I destroy too much
I'm lonely but no one can tell.

Oh yes, I'm the Great Destroyer
A drift in a world of my own
I play the game; but to my real shame
You've let me to Destroy all alone.

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal.

Oh yes I'm the Great Destroyer
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be, what I'm not; you see,
I'm wearing your heart like some bling
Destroying all that's still around.

Too real is this feeling of make believe
Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal

Yes I'm the great Destroyer
Just laughing and gay like a clown
I seem to be what I'm not you see
I'm wearing your heart like some bling
Destroying everything, Like you're still around.

Well almost.

yeah, I just got it. It is pretty much totally awesome yet to violent for a young man such as yourself. And has some "suggestible content" as well, which pretty much means it's the best game ever. We can see who gets the highest score, I think they post your records on xbox live. Maybe I'll do you a favor drop some hints to pops next time I talk to him... ;)

BTW, your old man is really concerned about you, so don't be to hard on him. And when you go to Italy in a few weeks for the love of god, remember he is back at home worried sick about you, so don't get caught up in any soccer hooliganny or political riots or whatever it is american tourists overseas get mixed up in...

Get well soon!

I had my tonsils and adenoids out when I was a kid, and my adenoids have apparently grown back very large! I have two observations to make:

1) What the hell are adenoids!
2) Do they always grow back, or am I half man half lizard?

1) What the hell are adenoids!
QUOTE]

[QUOTE]http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/ill_injure/sick/adenoids.html The adenoids (say: add-eh-noids) are lumpy clusters of spongy tissue that help protect kids from getting sick. They sit high on each side of the throat behind the nose and the roof of the mouth. Although you can easily see your tonsils by standing in front of a mirror and opening your mouth wide, you can't see your adenoids this way. A doctor has to use a small mirror or a special scope to get a peek at your adenoids.

Like tonsils, adenoids help keep your body healthy by trapping harmful bacteria and viruses that you breathe in or swallow. Adenoids also contain cells that make antibodies to help your body fight infections. Adenoids do important work as infection fighters for babies and little kids. But they become less important once a kid gets older and the body develops other ways to fight germs.

Some doctors believe that adenoids may not be important at all after kids reach their third birthday. In fact, adenoids usually shrink after about age 5, and by the teenage years they often practically disappear.

2) Do they always grow back, or am I half man half lizard?

http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/can-tonsils-amp-adenoids-grow-back.html If even a small bud of tonsil or adenoid tissue is left behind by the surgeon, the tonsil or adenoid may regrow. With regard to tonsillectomy, the risk of regrowth depends greatly on technique. At one time, some surgeons performed subcapsular tonsillectomies, in which the outermost shell of the tonsil was left behind. I am told this operation was less painful than a regular tonsillectomy, in which the entire tonsil is removed. Unfortunately, incompletely removed tonsils have a nasty tendency to regenerate.

So...you're not a lizard. You just got a lazy doctor.

And feel better, GD! Popsicles are your friend; dairy products can lead to infection of the area. :thumbs2:
