View Full Version : CHRIS REEVE SUPERMAN BUILD.

Bobby C
07-03-2008, 07:16 AM
on this thread I will be showing the extreamly difficult build of Superman Chris reeve.
this is my 3rd go and final, I really believe this one will be the one.
I will be posting pics of the past Reeve and thoughts.

With this build he will be in a Landing pose, altough the pics show the arms out and the leg high up , it has been changed to a more relaxed stance, but still will be floating above the base.
this is the early proto.
and I will show pics of the new one next week.

I really liek this stance, but of course not as mean!
it may sound funny but I have been looking at allot of pictures Of jessus and trying to incorparate some type of heavenly feel to this new one,
I think it will work out real well and yu will understand more as the days go by.
here is todays work. I listened to some of the guys and believe they are correct in the lips as well as the cheek area(fixed)

Very inspired pose. The likeness looks great, as does the 1/3 Reeve piece in the second picture.

old superman,
these guys were real nice to us< me and Jack hit it off real good.
this was our first attempt. you will see a dramatic difference in each piece.

this is jack , he told me Chris reeve was afraid of him, altough I can see why, even now he has a real strong personality.

Chris reeve to me is a rubics cube,
his body you have to get exact or your screwed. but you guys will see from start to finish.

also forgot to mention, I have to think 10 steps ahead, even things like how the eyelashes will look, are the eyes to wide.
Silicon delutes things but you still have to know what it delutes.

LOOKS GREAT SO FAR. THE FLOATING POSE SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE A CHALLENGE (TRYING TO CAPTURE THE EFFECTS OF WEIGHTLESSNESS ON HIS BODY FOR INSTANCE) BUT THE END RESULT WILL BE WORTH IT! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!

I like it Bobby. It's looking amazing. Great likeness. In some of the pictures, it sometimes looks like Reeve's jaw goes further back which adds more meat to his face (makes his face wider). It makes his overall jaw look more squarish. Can you post a profile shot of your sculpt (side view)? It would be easier to test this theory by looking at the profile.

Bobby C

Hi vader oics coming tonight, I know what you mean on the back of the jaw line, my wife pointed that out as well, I think I jumped the likness factor up ALLOT! well I will let you gys be the judge, .

with so many CR superman projects going on, you can bet one thing.... this is the benchmark that everyone should strive for.

Near as i can tell, Christopher Reeve is a really hard likeness to pull off successfully (because he had such strong, prominent features, that he could easily end up in the realm of caricature if the sculptor isn't careful). Have to say that your version of the actor is probably the most naturalistic i've seen (especially the corners of the mouth - quite subtle!) Great job so far!

Bobby C
07-06-2008, 08:04 PM
Hi Guys, thanks for stopping in , I love the opinions good or bad.
here is a bit of small tweaks, , Vader I will snap some side shots as soon as the battery charges.
still not happy I have some minor things on the lip region that bothers me. I do not want a puckered look at all, that is one of the biggest mistakes people make.
couple more days (I hope)

The black and white picture in this reference material is probably pretty close to the expression you've got on reeve. This may help you with the fine-tuning of the lips. It also shows you the depth of the jawline. So does the picture of him as clark at the top. It's looking great bobby. You're going to get this one perfect. After that, you will have conquered one of the hardest likenesses there is.

Ozz
07-07-2008, 11:35 AM
Bob, I showed the final picture to a couple of friends around, and they think we should lower the ears a bit - but not too much. What do you think?

Bobby C
07-07-2008, 05:05 PM
Hi Oz, maybe not a good ide, the head is looking down woch gives the illusion of them being high up, I will snap some shot sleter bro.

Vader
07-07-2008, 05:19 PM
I think its the angle of the head.

How's the Reeve going? I can't wait to see it!

Bobby C
07-12-2008, 07:47 AM
Hi vader, if all else fails , paint the clay!, well this actaully helps me even more,
I cant do nothing about the cross eye at this time, and I have to tripple check him, likeness is getting there.
2 minute paint up shows me everyhting.

Vader
07-12-2008, 07:51 AM
It's looking really good. this is a different picture. will give you a different perspective. Sometimes reeves "superman" hair can be distracting.

Vader
07-12-2008, 08:02 AM
I'd say the bottom lip is slightly full and a little long. It may taper more at the edges. But its pretty amazing. still would love to see a profile shot.

Bobby C
07-12-2008, 08:07 AM
I would have to agree with you. maybe a bit long, just really trying to stay away from the puckered look.
I take pics and study them , go back and do the changes, the eye throws me off big time.

aklso once he goes int o silicon it amplifies the likeness
you seriously get blind when doing a sculpt there is so much pressure on getting correct.
.

Vader
07-12-2008, 08:10 AM
In this picture, you can see a similar angle.

Vader
07-12-2008, 08:14 AM
You want to get this one right because you're pretty close. Can you rework after you do the silicone pull?

It's just with the degree of the smile, it's hard to nail it down. His lips can thin out quite a bit depending on the smile. So you really have to use the right picture to capture the moment.

I still think there is slightly more width in the cheek/jaw area. But I could be wrong. The eye might be throwing me off. It makes it looks like the eyes are position closer than they are.. If you can post shots at different angles, including a profile shot, it would help me to see the full thing.

Bobby C
07-12-2008, 08:17 AM
I will post some pics when i get up, I have one pic I will post that I like allot.
maybe your right on the width, that can be easliy altered in silicon, but I will keep going till I nail it .

Vader
07-12-2008, 08:18 AM
There is no question it's reeve. You've captured the likeness incredibly. This is niggly nit picking. I'm trying to find something wrong. Knowing how much of a perfectionist you are, I just wouldn't want you to feel you didn't hit the likeness 100% after the project is done. You may have it, but I've only seen the one angle. I'm scared to throw you off.

Vader
07-12-2008, 08:21 AM
The more I look at it, the likeness is incredible!

TOM S.
07-12-2008, 09:02 AM
Looks like you're really close with the likeness (about 99.9% there, actually!)- just wondered if viewing the sculpture with a more diffused lighting source (like most of the reference photos i've seen posted) would help clarify the questions with the lips? I know on some people, the red lip portion doesn't necessarily follow the roll of the lip - don't know if that's the case here - just an observation. The sculpture looks great though!

07-12-2008, 10:54 AM
I noticed that you painted the clay..did you do that in photoshop or did you actually PAINT the caly..and if so, what kind of paint and how do you remove it if you still need to work?? I am following this thread like a TV soap opera! LOVE IT! keep the updates comin' bro!:buttrock: :buttrock:

some more good reference.

Bobby C
07-12-2008, 05:01 PM
Thanks very much for keeping with me on this piece guys, well, Sean I actaully painted the clay, this is just a technique that helps me see the person better, for instance if it looks good with a 2 minute paint job then imagen the piece when in silicon human hair nice eyes etc.

if you see it in person (again) even though in clay it really is coming out great, You will hardly ever hear me say this about my work, it is just choppy.
the slighest removale or addition of clay can throw everything off.

when you look at C Reeves he really looks different in every picture. so I try to find pics that show his bone structure only. very difficult! hardest piece ever!
