View Full Version : 1/4 scale Russell Crowe "Maximus" Portrait

This was done as part of a group commission a couple years back. I don't know what happened to the final figure but I took some fresh pix of the portrait recently and thought I'd add them to my site. I'd love to revisit this character in 1/6 someday.

Hi Vader,
It's a 1/4 statue, with change of head. Right now, the casts are being finished and will go first to the people in my group that joined this project since the begin and are waiting years for it.
We will have some extra casts available by some of the members after everyone have theirs in hand, so PM me directly for more info, as I wouldn't want to discuss this in Andy's space. :)

Beautiful peice Andy -- The likeness is dead on. Gladiator is one of my all time favorite movies and you did a remarkable job on Maximus.

The rest of the sculpt is incredible as well - excellent, excellent work.

Those who are getting one of these beauties are truly fortunate. What an awesome collectors piece.

Was a long wait, but well worth it. I was thinking about having mine faux bronzed, but I guess direct paint will be the way to go to fit in with the rest of the collection. Will talk to the painter to see if there is some way to stylize though. Possibly a desaturation or bronzish type highlights. My son loves Gladiator.

Yes, several times. He sent me a PM on 2/12 asking for money for shipping. I sent him $27 a couple weeks back to cover the UPS shipping for my 3 casts. I may have already paid for shipping once before, but I can't remember. I have since heard nothing. He has also stopped responding to my PM's.

He originally promised to ship these to me around October or so. This is getting beyond ridiculous. I'm going to call him out on the board if this isn't resolved in the next 3 days.

Very nice paint up. A little surprised the customer wanted to go with the alternate head as it covers up much of Andy's incredible likeness (not too mention...he never wears the helmet with this particular armor set in the movie). This is one of my favorites in my collection and would probably be the last piece to go if i ever had to get rid of my collection for any reason. There is only one thing about it I didn't like.....and that was the elongated neck. I had my painter sand down the vertical section of the neck and add some bulk to the horizontal section...so it looked more natural and less like a giraffe.

What's a piece like this cost (pardon the ignorance) if a mere mortal like myself were to wish for one?

How many versions were made available? Painted, unpainted & signed by Andy? How many total were ever made?

Gladiator is one of my all-time favorite movies!

I dunno, man. Not many were made, and I don't know how many would want to part with such an awesome piece.

Incidentally, I just got word from Saul that took me completely by surprise. After a month or two with no word, he shot me an email saying my Maximus is done! I have never had a master painter do one just for me so I didn't know how the process works.

I expected maybe he'd ask how I'd like it done or what colors etc. But I knew I was in very capable hands.

The finished work looks stunning! A little darker than I expected in comparison to a few of the others shown but the paintwork is one that can only be done by a master. The accents on the chestpiece looks flawless. (Well everything looks flawless, I'm just too lazy to go into detail)

I knew Saul is proud of it or else he wouldn't have told me it was finished and shown me. (I am somewhat of an artist as well so I know how it works, and an artist NEVER criticizes the work of another). The pics he provided were pretty lores so I'll ask his permission for hires pics and will post them if I get his blessing.

I am truly stoked!

Well here he is. My own Maximus, painted by none other than the great Saul Alvarez. He is pleased with this and that's good enough for me.

He's been a champ all throughout the process and has been kind enough to let me post the pics he sent me for approval. Picture credits belong to Mr Alvarez himself. I don't have mine yet but soon.

Super stoked! :buttrock:

My Maximus has arrived! Expertly built and painted by Mr. John Allred. Can't say enough nice things about the guy.

I sprinkled some 1/4 scale synthetic rose petals on the base. I think it adds a nice touch, further giving the piece that final battle feel. I also found a nice pedestal at the store earlier today to put him on. So happy to finally have this piece in my collection.

I finished this up today - I decided to go with the helmetless head to recreate the final battle. I made some rose petals for the floor, added some extra blue fabric to the lower neck and made a small necklace, as Maximus wears one throughout the film.

I have mine displayed proudly at work too. His sword bent though, so when I tried to bend it back it snapped.

Any idea how to fix it? It's a clean break but halfway up the blade.
