Question for Sculptors

Do all sculptors work from the inside out or do any of you'es work oldschool and carve from a block?

Okay seriously most folks have their own preferences... I do believe though that the most common method is to build up the forms.

Then it becomes both additive as well as subtractive...

kd, so there is no one producing a sculpt old school? I know the materials are different.

Well I can't say with any certainty B-... But in this medium and industry I can't see carving old school from a block being a very effective use of time with deadlines looming... It's more like make your skeleton for proportions and then build that up rather tan having to "Find" the figure in the clay so to speak!!!

I'm to jut in for a sec, though by no means am I a sculptor, but I think sculpting from a block while can be done from a block of clay is left more to those that sculpt from rock/marble/stone and so on to chisel away features since there's hardly any additive in that process unless it's all plaster and such. It's what I'm guessing though in 3D we also build it by forms, much faster, like Kdawg says cause of deadlines.

I guess your right. I'm a huge fan of sculptor its probably my favourite art form and I’m fascinated on the different methods employed. I've been to Italy twice and I love how Michelangelo and the rest of his peers carved their pieces from a piece of block marble or stone. It’s also interesting to see his room of unfinished works and figure out his method of removing his masterpiece from the block. I'm equally fascinated with the method of working from the inside out, this is definitely a more flexible method of sculpting but those involve further processes to create a lasting piece like moulding /pouring etc.
