Please help! First off, what do you guys mean when you say 100% cropped? Secondly, what am I doing wrong on Photobucket? I took this pic...

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/HoldyourfireAl/My%20Photography/Aug%2023%2008%20The%20Spider/IMG_3639.jpg

and then cropped off some of the sides & got this...

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/HoldyourfireAl/My%20Photography/Aug%2023%2008%20The%20Spider/IMG_3639-1.jpg

Seems like the spider got smaller.

Any ideas?

http://www.pbase.com/wlhuber/100_crop_

it's a term often used to show details magnified where you normally could not see shrunk down for viewing on the web. also known as pixel peeping. :)

my example where i showed a picture of my neighbor's fence across the street and a 100% portion where you can make out the honeycomb and wasp details.

btw, scary spider! ;)

OK... A 100% crop did this...

The problem is that it doesn't capture the whole spider.

Next I tried using the Crop Tool (c)
and got this...

Am I not using the right tools? What size should I make the image?

I'm confused. I'm basically getting the crop stuff, but I think I want to trim the image to get rid of the excess black & center the spider. Any ideas?

Another one. The images are coming out too big!

Next image, I reduced to 1024 x 768 in Photobucket. Seems to take some of the impact away from the spider & details are lost.

Also, any recommendations for a good forum to learn Photoshop?

Well I took the biggest resolution pic you had used the rectangular marquee tool and drew a square around the part of the pic I wanted to keep which was the spider centered and did edit-copy, then file-new-paste. Then Image-Image size. I made the new pic 280 resolution and 1080 high x 777 high.

Hmmm...still confused.

K let's try this

Step 1- Open the pic
Step 2 - Use the rectangular marquee to select the part of the pic you want

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/Tyz1on/Figures/1.jpg

Step 3 - Once it's selected click "Edit" Select "Copy"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/Tyz1on/Figures/2.jpg

Step 4 - Click "File" and select "New"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/Tyz1on/Figures/3.jpg

Step 5 - When the new text box opens Click "OK"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/Tyz1on/Figures/4.jpg

Step 6 - When the new graphic box opens click "Edit" and select "Paste"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/Tyz1on/Figures/5.jpg

Step 7 - Now you have the cropped pic but you still need to re-size it. Click "Image" select "Image Size"

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/Tyz1on/Figures/6.jpg

Step 8 - When the Image Size text box opens I type "280" in the resolution box, and 1080 in the height box. As long constrain proportions is selected the rest of the boxes fill in automatically. For portrait type pics and I use 1080 in height box and 1080 in the width box for landscape type pics.

Hope this helps Al.

I'll try it tonight! Thanks so much for your help! I know that last night, I was using the Marquee tool & it didn't cover the whole spider. Was I doing something wrong?

probably

you can also use the crop tool to crop the picture. then 'save as' to preserve the original. reduce the image size on the cropped file and save once more. done.

You're quite welcome Al. With the marquee tool it's a simple left click where you want the new pic to start and drag the cursor to where you want the new pic to end. I usually start in an upper corner and drag the cursor to the opposite bottom corner and release. If I make a mistake and miss part of the picture just reclick somewhere else and the marquee starts again.
