Strange scene choice.

I actually think it's an excellent choice. It's a classic scene. I mean, who didn't squirm just a bit from the sound of Vader crushing his neck with his bare hands and those crackling bones fragments... As an 9 year old watching that, it totally freaked me out!

Yeah, this does look good. And while I didn't even really think about it that way risingstar is right in thats its a pretty powerful and important scene (maybe not NOW but back in 1977 it sure was.)

Did Vader physically choke someone before? Can't recall.

Thought it was a choke by the 'force'.

Nope. He force choked the guy in the meeting room but that was after this scene. And I guess technicly he force choked Padme in ROTS if you want to go in that order.

Yeah....he lifts him off the ground and they show a shot of his feet in the air. It's on the corellian cruiser in Episode IV...just after the Imperials have taken over the cruiser. Great scene.

I like the this choice for a diorama.

I will pass on this one, I simply don't like those small statue's.

If SS jumped up and made 1/6 diorama's this one would have been friggin cool.

Or else it's a great diorama, great scene.
Wonder if there are Stormies to scale with this dio line, then you could place your own troopers behind the dio.

I considered that also, but I suppose it was a choice made so that you could actually "see" the details of the statue from multiple angles. It probably would have been better to just leave the wall out.

I think it's a very iconic scene from A New Hope. Next thing for them to do is another iconic scene from A New Hope in which Obi Wan is sitting in his den with Luke swinging his father's lightsaber. It would be great, what with C3PO and R2-D2 being in the same diorama.

I love the way they showed the length of Vader, his rope is amazing, also negative points, the face of Captain Antilles is to cartoonish and i don't like the piece of ship on the base.

Still i am thinking of buying it.

Sledge Hammer!

I love the idea of the piece more than the actual execution of it. The idea of basing a diorama on the first scene that memorably introduced Vader to the world is rock solid, but the rendering of it misses the mark a bit for me personally. The small wall segment just comes off looking random, while the trooper's face is very cartoonish, complete with giant caterpillar eyebrows. The trooper also looks too small, almost in an out of scale way, compared to Vader...

It's still okay, but it's not all that I had hoped for. As such I remain undecided on this one, but will likely pass...

Rudy
09-05-2008, 09:40 AM
NOOOOOOOO this is exactly what I was afraid of, a small base, no troopers and no environment (just a small part of the ship that doesnt even make sense) I would kill for a Vader dio but this is not it. It breaks my heart to say this but PASS....

I really like this but the extra piece of ship is very weird. The cartoon face isn't that big a deal sicne I will either have it sideways or with Vader facing out to see his sculpt. I don't know for sure though... well see if I keep it.

If this was done in 1:6 (12 inch) scale it would still make sense but in 1:9 scale you gotta have some troopers and at least part of a wall or a door at the background to make it a true diorama.

Sledge Hammer!
09-05-2008, 05:17 PM
Yeah, I'd rather pay more money and include a pair of armed Stormtroopers, one on each side of vader. But maybe they're saving that for the "Vader's Entrance" diorama down the line ;) ...which I'd buy, actually, now that I think about it. Vader after having stepped through the airlock doorway, flanked by Stormtroopers...yep indeedy.

I still think if they had Vader standing infront of Liea, it would sell out much faster.
Then, they could have done a Stormtrooper dio that could connect to them and have the troopers standing behind Liea. It would look good as a stand alone piece, also.

Sideshow isn't generally known for tweaking their pieces once they're up for sale, are they?

This piece is still a tweak or two from being great. It's unfortunate that Sideshow isn't open to constrictive insights during any phase of the sculpting process.

I know they do tweak a few here and there (the main one I can remember is changing the color of Plo Koons lightsaber) but they won't do anything drastic like add Stormtroopers or more wall or anything like that.

I like it but not sure if worth $200, Antilles face is cartoonish, no stormies, and that part of the ship looks odd (would have looked better with a complete wall or without any extra part). I have to think about this...

I agree with thx217, it's one of the best. Sculpt-wise and proportion-wise it's great. But I won't be caught buying this piece because I hate ANH Darth Vader. Oh and I also hate ROTS Darth Vader. ESB and ROTJ are the best Vader costume imo.

Am swayed. Will get this piece and if I still don't love the face, I'll always tilt him away from view anyway. The size difference only enhances Vader's persona so it doesn't really bother me.
