View Full Version : Best Long Term Photo Hosting Site?

I need a site that...

1. Gives me a lot of storage space
2. Will be around a long time
3. Doesn't shrink my images too much

I started a family message board that will feature pictures & I'd like it to last for years, without the pics going away. I've been using Photobucket, but you only get 1 Gig of space. Is there a better alternative?

I'm hearing good things about Smugmug.

Thoughts?

It looks like you can't just copy an IMG code in Flickr & paste it in a message board. That is a BIG advantage to Photobucket!

In other words, you can't just copy & paste a hotlink to your Flickr image from a message board.

photobucket's copy/paste IMG code is so convenient. it's the one thing that makes it my favorite image hosting site. i have a flickr account but i rarely use it unless photobucket is down and i want to upload images as a backup.

Ed, how do you find the two compare in terms of overall upload image quality?

I have only used photobucket and I find the upload picture never looks as good as the jpeg that is saved to my folder.

that's what Al tells me also. my photobucket settings are to upload my images up to 1MB. i rarely ever output anything over that so i'm ok and not subject to any of photobucket's conversions.

as for flickr.. i haven't really noticed since i rarely use my account. i just have a few pics on it.

Dont you get a 200 pic limit unless you pay to have more?

all you have to do is right click + copy the url of your image-- darn near all of the photos in my thread are hosted on flickr

yes, that is correct

it's not a big deal to me since I use my own site for hosting the majority of my galleries (i have only used up 130 so far on flickr), if you want it to be an all-encompassing album, that's something to consider.

photobucket has limits with free accounts too (1GB of space)

you have to keep in mind that flickr is more than just a hosting site-- it's has community/networking aspects as well. you will get views/comments from other flickr-ites--- how many people have commented on anybody's photobucket pages?

p1xar, the shot of the enterprise is awesome! you should get a pic of it outside at night to make it appear real. :buttrock:

So...Flickr & Smugmug do NOT have this feature?

Flickr & Smugmug DEFINITELY feature a better pic, but without the copy/paste pic, they are worthless.

Explain...

Using one of my pics as an example:

http://flickr.com/photos/21513085@N03/2868959081/

From here, I usually click 'all sizes' which allows me to select the original size as I uploaded it. From there, it's just a matter of right clicking on the photo and 'copy image location' (Firefox)

Paste the url, done.

Can you paste the url into the body of the post? Can you do this multiple times in the same post?

i suppose the way to get around this here is to click "Go Advanced" first then "Insert Image" icon and copy/paste the right clicked "Copy Image Location" buffer into it to get your IMG tags in between.

yes, it's a few extra steps. :D

....?

This is the url for the above image: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3264/2868959081_0c8384fe60_o.jpg

And you can do it as many times as the forum allows.

Right, but you can't just click the code in Flickr & then paste it into the body of a message board post. See what I'm saying?

No, there isn't a code that is laid out for you (as far as I know). But the net result is one extra click to accomplish the same thing...

Not really. I tried it. In a post, you have to click the image box, then security pops up & you have to temporarily allow a script, then you have to hit the image box again, then you have to past the address in it. That's a lot more work per pic than clicking on an img code & pasting it into the body of a post.

:)

CharlesSong

Well that's an issue with your browser then if a prompt pops up asking you to allow a script.

Charles, are you sure you don't have some type of add-on program that's running to put your image into the [IMG ] brackets? When I click your link, and then click on all sizes, and then click copy image location, all I get is the url, it doesn't post it as an actual image into the thread.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3264/2868959081_d9a066108f.jpg

I use Firefox as well.

EDIT: Okay, I think I see. Charles clicks the 'add photo' or whatever button in the 'advanced' screen and posts his link in there (I'm guessing). The best thing about PB is, once your photo uploads, all the different html code styles are right there, you just click the one you want and paste (no need to right click and 'save' anything, it's just copied into your clipboard). Also no need to go into advanced edit on the forum.

So I'm guessing it saves you quite a few clicks.

I have my PB setting at 2MB, might as well since it doesn't hurt anything. It doesn't make your pictures any larger, but if you need the extra space (for a HUGE photo), it won't reduce the quality. I wonder if the photo editing software actual makes the pictures look better than than they would anywhere outside of that software.

Some folks at Smugmug have helped me, by writing a script that enables me to have the same functionality as Photobucket, but on this VERY superior website! Check out this thread...

I've been with smugmug for years and haven't found the need to explore other options.

One of my favorite things about smugmug is the ease of adding descriptions to the photos and the tools that allow you to arrange photos and the galleries. This was actually weakness of SMUGMUG when I first started as that process was rather cumbersome but they constantly look for ways to improve their service and all those little annoyances I experienced early on are long gone.

I don't have any pictures of my statue collection yet, but you can see my collection of original artwork.
