View Full Version : What's the reason for keeping toys in their packages?

Let's see - my point of view is that not only does it make the figure more valuable in the long run - but it's also better to look at! Such detail goes into a lot of the packages - they are like works of art themselves! I love my toys in their packages and would have to buy an extra if I wanted an open figure.

I know some people don't keep their figures MIP but I do and I love it!

I'm not alone out there - who else loves their toys in the original packages?

some figures look good in package, but i'd say most do not. they are packaged in weird poses more often then not and very rarely do their accesories get shown off nicely.

I wonder if you get a lot of them and your toy room starts to look like a toy store and then you feel like you own a whole toy store which is every ones secret dream (with all due respect to Fraud or was it Fried), if that is the reason for keeping them in the packages??

Also they won't get dusty. or greasy paws all over them and if the doggie chews he/she will have to work through the wrapping first.....??

I open everything and display everything.
Mostly the higher end comic and movie stuff.
I get the same enjoyment as a comic statue.
Would I leave a statue in the box???? No way!

Screw the packaging. I dont have room for all that anyways.

I agree with this too, although I'd also say the overall quality of figures has significantly dropped in the past couple of years, as a lot of companies seem to be trying to cut corners to save money, so I don't buy all that much these days, because I find that these days, too often, the quality just isn't there unfortunately.

I can't believe adults play with toys. Leave them in the package.

Ditto, but I'm suprised that statue collectors are into action figures.

i'm not one to play, hell i'm one of the worst figure posers ever, but i just think they display better when they can breathe

You leave them in the package so when you come to your senses and realize you're an adult with action figures tacked to your walls you will at least be able to recover half of what you paid for them, if you're lucky.

Man, you guys are rough...

Look, I collect Hulk memorbilia. A lot of that includes Hulk action figures. I love the statues - but I have just as much love for the figures.

And... are you claiming that you are MORE of an adult because you collect statues rather than figures? That is the thinnest argument I've ever heard.

Some obscure characters get made too.
I mean Bubba Ho-Tep statues just ain't going to happen, but I can at least have the figures.

I can't believe people who collect one geeky thing are so quick to criticize people who collect another geeky thing, seems pretty silly to me, not to mention a bit elitist. Plus just because something is more expensive, that doesn't necessarily make it any more 'mature' to collect, and anyone who thinks buying a Hulk or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle or G.I. Joe statue puts them somehow on a higher and more mature collecting pier than those who collect, I dunno, Movie Maniac figures or something is seriously kidding themselves. It's all geek-bait, just like comic books and tpb's and replica props and scaled cars and any host of other collectable you could mention, so just enjoy yourself, buy what pleases you, and go with it, no need to piss on other peoples parades about what they happen to be into. Just because something might not be of appeal to you personally, doesn't make their appeal worthless, nor those who collect them any less valid of a collector. That's my policy and opinion anyway. :)

Besides, the figures that I've collected over the years are basically plastic statues anyway in the vast majority of cases, and some of them sculpt wise are better than the equivalent statue pieces, while many, many other characters have no statue equivalent at all. I don't 'play' with them any more than I play with stautues or replicas, they are strictly display pieces. I buy what I like and enjoy, and what I think looks good and will display well, regardless of price or material used, and I make no apologies for that, nor should anyone else in my not so humble opinion. Collecting's collecting if you ask me (not that anyone did...) :)

The NECA Aliens out now?

those things are awesome.

Any ALIEN fan would be happy with those.

Plastic actuallly lends itself well to those greasy lizards with no eyes.

I was just kidding. I have a bunch of Movie Maniacs figures signed by the actors who played them. I wouldn't tack them to my walls though.

All my Simpsons, Muppets, Star Wars, and Star Trek action figures are still in their original packaging. Some are even encased in protective packaging. Personally, I don't play with them, it's more an admiration thing than entertainment.

Yeah, I have to admit, I never really understood the whole 'stick the package to the wall' thing, but hey, to each their own I guess. :)

Mine are all mint in package in the closet. I have never opened any of them. I like knowing that I have the female figures that I like. I don't need to look at them every day. But when I was 15-23 I would buy 5-10 of all the female characters. I have this huge plastic container that has Batman the Animated Series in it. I have 6 Poison Ivy's 7 Phantazms, 6 Catwoman, 3 Harley, 6 Batgirl. I think I had something for the 1 per case figures. Anyways I still have them mint in mint package. Along with my 22 Spider-Woman figures.:happybirt I also have every female superhero figure for the last 16 years.

I used to keep all mine in the package thinking they'd be worth more money later - and I think that's still true. But I also considered them "investments"...wow! buy stuff I like and keep them in the package and sell for profit later...wrong!

I've got hundreds of mastercartons just sitting in a building...ahhh adolescence.

I changed to statues since they are "nicer" for display and I can open them and enjoy them.

I now open cases of my figures now and then and give them to children to play with...now THAT is fun! And what they were designed for.

For the last couple months I've been selling a huge action figure collection for someone and it's sickening how little they're selling for compared to what he paid.

Sledge Hammer!

Yeah on rare occasions there will be a figure that'll really pick up value comparative to what they cost to buy originally, particularly if it's still MIB or MOC, but everything is so mass produced from the 80's onwards that even the "rare" stuff is still made in pretty large quantities compared to stuff from back in the day, so almost none of it ever really rises that high in value, unless it's a recall or an error or something. A lot of pieces burn hot on the secondary market for a while, and then eventually demand dies down, and before you know it nobody really much cares anymore. There are exceptions, sure, but for the most part you'd be lucky if most pieces you buy held their value, let alone making any real money off of them...unless you sell at just the right time, or get lucky.

I have some very rare pieces from the past 15 years or so, and even those I'm guessing I'd make 3 or 4 times what I originally paid for them, maybe 5 or 6 times if I'm extra lucky and the right people saw them, or a bidding war started, but it's still pretty much small fry money comparitively in most cases, and not really worth the effort in digging them out and parting with them. Maybe in another 20 years (if none of them see re-releases in the meantime), but even then I'm hardly going to get rich off of any of them...

Yeah, I don't think too many figure collectors from the 80's, 90's and 00's will be retiring off of the funds made from selling their collections...

I only buy Hulk figures but one day I walked into Toys R Us and saw a gold plated Iron Man. I knew it was hot and it was going for more - butthere it was just sitting on the pegs - to boot, it was the only ML on the pegs. Anyways, I sold it a while later for 10x what I paid for it. I was really lucky there...

I am still keeping my eyes open for that Conan figure sitting on his throne. That one has gone way up in price. It's a Mcfarlane figure and was gone before I got into collecting.

Some action figures are amazing in their detail and realism. Predator on his throne comes to mind.

I have that Conan, didn't even realise that had become sought after actually, been out of the fig scene for the most part for a couple of years now so I guess I've lost touch when it comes to the current values of things. It is quite a cool piece actually, and I got mine for a bargain price locally too. And no, you can't have it, sorry... :p

It's a damn shame McFarlane never continued with the Conan line, most of those were quite nice pieces, and I've still got most of them on my shelves. Including Conan on his throne, which is probably the highlight of all the McFarlane Conan pieces for my money.
