"Imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist, if nothing else think of their typing skills.”

Wasn't there someone like this in Gattaca?

Children of the atom.

This isn't that uncommon. I doubt the extra digits will prove to be all that useful later in life and just being different will make growing up difficult. Add to this his parents named him Hubbarb!

I believe they leave it up to the individual/parents to decide.

they tie the extras up tight with rubber bands...then they eventually turn black and fall off

saw a similar article in the local paper around 2 years ago. dad and son both had 12 fingers and 12 toes

I don't see it as a problem as long as the digits are fully formed and functional.

I'm not sure that would work with a fully formed finger with bones inside.

"Polydactyly": your word for the day!

Polydactyly usually refers to non-working extra fingers/toes, I don't know if they just use the same term in a situation like this.

As long as it's fully functional and looks normal other than than having an extra digit, I think they should let the kid keep them.

It's the same in either case - just refers to the extra digits, regardless of whether they function or not.

This is my college pre-med background talking (not mad scientist), but I wonder how his nervous system is wired to control the additional digits. If he has full control of four additional apendages, regardless of the size, it is quite fascinating. Or I wonder if the additional apendages are co-wired with the pinkies and/or little toes, meaning that although they have a complete range of motion, they move in tandem with a companion digit and access the same neural pathways (hmmm, would pain in one result in pain in the other). I wonder if the parents will be approached and offered money by neuroscience firms looking to study some of these and other phenomena. There could also be quite a bit of genetic research that can be conducted. Ya, ya, it's a mutation somewhere in the line. Don't get your hopes up, a couple of extra fingers and toes aren't exactly wings. Although sometimes babies are born with tails :)

aside from the obvious problems with glove and shoe purchases the kid will probably have an eaiser time if they just chop them off now before he knows any better

Yeah there was a character in Gatica who was like Liberache. he can play a piece on the paino that no normal person can play. I would so teach him paino from an early age

I thought we were suppose to lose one for evolution... :confused2

Evolutionarily, the toes on the feet have been merging for tens of thousands of years. Occasionally the last two digits do fuse together. The foot used to be very similar in function to the hand (much like in primates) until our species came down from the trees. This is evident in looking at xrays of the bones in the foot, which still bear some resemblance to their counterparts in the hand. The big toe used to be opposable like the thumb. In another 200,000-500,000 years or so (haven't done the tables myself) The four toes will likely merge and function as a single unit, and the big toe will be the only separate digit. So the kid is less an evolutionary progression, but rather a genetic glitch so to speak.
