I took a break from photography for a year or two and finally started getting into it again when I bought my XSI. I've been getting back into the groove again over the last few months and thought it was about time to throw down in the photography forum.

My older stuff has my ol' dr_teng angry watermark, the newer stuff is from my review website.

hi dr_teng sorry to ask these questions to you,coz im just a beginner and dont have a knowledge yet about photography and i want to know and learn more about photography...my 1st is what particular camera did you used for this pic and how far are you from the subject?..did you use a light for him/photoshop?.

tnx
tony

I'm more than happy to answer questions, no worries.

For that particular shot (and about 90% of the shots I do) I'm shooting on a Canon Rebel XSI + Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. I'd say I was about a foot and a half away, and I cropped it down to that tight.

I used a flash, bounced off my roof, through a home-made lightbox.

http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/2006/07/how-to-diy-10-macro-photo-studio.html << that's where I learned how to do it. I'm on my second (and improved) version of it, but the Superman shot was taken with the first. I always slightly modify colours/contrast/sharpness in photoshop as the final step.

Thanks guys! I figure today I'll catch up on photography and take photos of the rest of my statues (for future reviews), then I'll hopefully have some time this weekend to take some more ~artistic~ shots. Here's a few from some upcoming reviews.

Whew, it's been a busy month so I'm way behind on my photography. I spent a few hours catching up yesterday, and once I get done some photo editing, I'll be able to post in my own photography thread on a regular basis. Just some photos for recent reviews today, but some fun stuff coming up soon!

Much much higher-res versions over at http://www.whatsyourobsession.com.

Finally, the kind of thing that's been taking up a lot of my time lately and distracting me from reviews/normal photos. I've been taking some in-depth Photoshop lessons, because while I've done a lot of photo editing, it's been mostly related to portraiture. I wanted to improve my portraiture skills and what the hell, might as well learn proper photo-manipulation stuff while I'm at it!

This is my first full attempt at such an effect :

http://www.water7.net/images/lj/XMenSentinel.jpg

There's a few flaws, but considering it was a whole new experience for me, I'm quite happy with it! Matching perspective/lighting/etc... is tricky.

dr_teng

Alrighty, had some more time this week. One regular photo, and one more photomanipulation.

hi dr teng, first of all, great shots. 2nd is...i'm kinda liking photography and is planning to take up this hobby. any suggestion for dslr? i am planning to buy one to kick off this hobby. thank you .

dr_teng
07-20-2009, 10:02 PM
Why thank you!

The two most popular systems out there are Nikon/Canon, it really depends on what your budget is. I'm all about Canon, and my wife uses Nikon, so I have experience with both systems, and a variety of cameras on each.

Personally, I use the Canon XSI with the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. The 50mm 1.8 is a lot more affordable and almost as good, it's considered one of the best starter lenses you can buy. The XSI isn't too expensive either.

If you try out a Nikon and want to go that route, let me know and I can get you some suggestions.

vernumortho
07-21-2009, 12:52 AM
will there be a lot of difference between the two?

dr_teng
07-21-2009, 07:42 AM
Between Nikon and Canon?

Not really, at least not in terms of picture quality. The main difference is in the feel and operation. The best thing to do is head to a camera store, get a similar model (say, the Canon XSI vs the Nikon D5000) and see which one feels better in your hands.

I recently got that Bowen Thanos, what an awesome statue. Decided to do an Infinity Gauntlet thing for fun.

We had this awesome storm last week so I took a few shots. It was my first time doing any sort of nature photography in the night, so I didn't get quite as much good stuff as I would've hoped, but I rather enjoyed that one.

Sure can, it's by Diamond Select. It's usually called the "Spider-man Showdown" statue.

Very nice pictures dr. teng, I think i am going to invest in one of the 50mm lenses for my camera. I have a rebel T1i, Which do you prefer the canon 50mm 1.4 or the sigma 50mm 1.4?

dr_teng
08-26-2011, 10:30 AM
The Sigma, the Canon one is significantly cheaper and a great investment though. It's been my primary lens for quite a few years! You really can't go wrong with either.

Hey dr teng it seem like you know alot about camera's so i have a question.....I just purchased a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens for pictures of the statues and a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom will these hold me over until i can get the Sigma 50mm 1.4? i need your help while i still have time to cancel

dr_teng
08-27-2011, 01:07 AM
Oh yeah, for sure. The 50mm 1.8 is a really good lens especially for the ridiculously good price it goes for. I initially had that one a long time ago. Once I realized I loved shooting at 50, I upgraded.

You'll be fine with that!
