Curious what songs defined the 80s for you...and just a few please. I dont know about most of you but when lists get too big I stop reading.

Here are my picks:

-Hall & Oats - Maneater
-Michael Jackson - Billy Jean (I might get flak for this, but MJ was the man back then)
-Lionel Ritchie - All Night Long
-Shannon - Let the Music Play
-The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra
-Paul Lekakis - Boom Boom (Let's go back to my room) - for comedy relief
-Culture Club - Karma Chameleon

Apart from Heavy Metal bands music from the 80's was pretty poor with the exception of the odd good song. Frankie goes to Hollywood had a couple of big hits too.

Donna Summer - This Time

Rick Ashley - Never Gonna Give You Up

Bananarama - Cruel Summer, Venus

Culture Club - Miss Me Blind, Karma Chameleon, War Song, Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me, I'll Tumble For Ya

For me in the 80's it was true mix...before Anthrax and Public Enemy mixed!

early 80's were definitely filled with breakdancing music, Early NY rap scene stuff..ie
Whodini
The Egyptian Lover
Curtis Blow
Midnight Star
Run DMC
Early LL Cool J (I am talking Radio album here!)
then I this led to typical 80's bands in the mid eighties(this is the stuff I kept hidden from my metal head friends for fear of being... <gulp>... made fun of)..ie
Psychedelic Furs
The Outfield
INXS
Tears for Fears
and then of course being a child of impression in like 86 I moved onto metal...
first favorite bands being
Iron Maiden
Motley Crue
Ozzy
Now there were small areas of a Skateboarding phase in between Breakin and Gothin...where i would only listen to poorly produced skate bands like DRI, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and so on...I mean I was a teen musician...I wanted to listen to it all!!

Colossus

Aha - Take on me
Digable Planets - cool like that ( although that may have been the 90's)
Good call on Aha...love that song - great video.
Digable Planets was more like 91 or 92.

I wanted to add 2 Live Crew - Me so horny  but that's more like 1990 or something.

I moved onto metal...
first favorite bands being
Iron Maiden
Motley Crue
Ozzy

If you had to pick one song to represent the 80's on these, I'd go:

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
Motley Crue - Looks that Kill
Ozzy - Crazy Train

And if you got these, you can't forget Judas Priest - either "Living After Midnight" or "You've Got Another Thing Comin' "!

The Romantics - What I like about you
Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer
Van Halen - 1984

That Song is off of The Razor's Edge released in 1990, so this is not an eighties song....now 80's AC/DC is something off of Back in Black, Flick of the Switch, or Fly on the Wall...and even Who made Who....

MadJazz- for me it would be
Iron Maiden- Number of the Beast
Motly Crue - Shout at the Devil
Ozzy - Mr.crowley
Judas Priest - Breaking the Law

madjazz

Mad4 - All good.

I completely agree that Back in Black has to be the entry for ACDC as well. This is one of the classic albums of all time - one of those rare albums a band is lucky if they hit once in their career. I'm talking albums like
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Moody Blues - Days of Future Past
Steve Miller Band - Book of Dreams
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Yes - Fragile
Steely Dan - Aja
Boston - Boston
Crosby Stills and Nash - DeJa Vu

Almost sounds like a new thread. I'll have to have a think on some other entries.

When I think of 80's music some of these performers come to mind:
Go-Go's, Culture Club, and Cindy Lauper.

I have always listened to a wide variety of music, and liked Hall & Oats, Pat Benatar, and Billy Joel back then.

But here are a few albums I listened to alot then:

Huey Lewis and the News - Sports, and Picture This
Van Halen - 1984
Loverboy - Loverboy, Get Lucky, and Keep It Up
Cars - Shake it Up and Heartbeat City
Foreigner - Foreigner 4, and Agent Provocateur
REO Speedwagon - Hi Infidelity
Joan Jett - I Love Rock N' Roll, and Bad Reputation
Bryan Adams - Reckless, and Cuts Like A Knife
John Cougar - American Fool
AC/DC - Back in Black
JOURNEY - Escape, Frontiers, and Raised On Radio

The eighties are tough to limit, because I discovered alot of music then. But:

RUN DMC: Everythiing they did defined (early) 80's rap to me at the time. Tey also influenced my "style" and identity at the time.

Public Enemy: "Fight the Power", "Yo, Bum Rush the Show," "Rebel Without a Pause", "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos." Public Enemy was more than the music, and helped me frame a consciousness.

Full Force

Prince the purple rain and sign of the times albums.

Journey: Separate ways worlds apart.

The Doors. Didn't "discover" their music until 1980.

The Police: Synchronicity.

How are we definining the 80s? Because wasn't U2's Rattle and Hum like 1989 or so? That's barely the 80s, and not really what I think about when I think about the 80s. When this question was asked, I'm thinking early 80s: valley girls, material girls, wish-they-all-could-be-California girls (yes, that's the David Lee Roth version, who may well be the demigod of the 80s...someone mentioned the album 1984 earlier, and they were on the right track...). I'm thinking new British invasion stuff, new wave, ska-punk. And yes, you have to admit it, Michael Jackson.

I got an 80s CD for my birthday one year, and the B-52s "Love Shack" was on it. Good song, but that's a 90s song, no doubt. The album was late 1989, but that don't make it an 80s song.

To me, the quintessential albums of the 80s are, at least in part:

-New Traditionalists, Devo
-Rio, Duran Duran
-Heartbeat City, The Cars
-Cargo/Business as Usual, Men at Work
-Asia, Asia
-Pyromania, Def Leppard
-Metal Health, Quiet Riot
-Thriller, Michael Jackson
-1984, Van Halen
-Dream Into Action, Howard Jones
-Avalon, Roxy Music
-She's So Unusual, Cyndi Lauper
-Purple Rain, Prince
-So, Peter Gabriel
-Stop Making Sense, Talking Heads
-Psychocandy, The Jesus and Mary Chain
-Sychronicity, The Police
-Songs from the Big Chair, Tears for Fears
-Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes
-Sports, Huey Lewis and the News
-Graceland, Paul Simon
-Can't Slow Down, Lionel Richie
-License to Ill, Beastie Boys (and to me, this marks the end of the 80s as a musical type--this helps usher in rap and hip-hop to white suburban audiences)

Some of these I never listen to anymore (Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, etc.), but you can't refute their effect on music in the early 80s. After 1987, I'd argue, music starts to move into a new area, and the 80s as we knew them are over.

Sorry for the big list. :)

Teague - some good choices and good points.

I can't believe I left the Talking Heads off my list. That was one of the best bands of the 80's and better than most bands in the 90's. If you had to pick one song, Burning Dowm the House would be it, although there are a lot of good ones.

Noone has mentioned Triumph either, and Never Surrender was an awesome 80's song.

Most of Joe Jackson's best stuff was in the 80's. He is truly the King of the Pop song.

To answer this question ........ I would have to say that there are a few that still give me a recall about a certain girl I dated or the situation I was in.

For one..., who ever made a good moment with the girl your seeing listening to Lionel Richie. Second, who could forget . . . George Micheal. Even though he turned out to be *** ....... he had some good songs. I always liked Depeche Mode. But if I can listen to a song, over-and-over ........... it would have to be the Police ..... wrapped around my finger.

I can't believe I'm seeing this thread again! I still maintain U2's "I still haven't found what I'm lookin' for" is the ultimate 80s song.

Depeche Mode - Black Celebration, People are People, Stripped, Little 15... You cannot go wrong with any of the four...

Hell Just pick up the Depeche Mode 101 album... it was released in 1990... but it has all of their 80s stuff on there...
