Here's my Bowen Colossus statue review. This statue came in two versions, a regular one, and a super chrome edition. The chrome edition goes for absurd prices, anywhere from $500-$800 in the last year. I have the normal edition, and I haven't even seen the chrome edition in person, so no opinions on that one.

Oh, and larger images are available at my site : What's Your Obsession - Bowen Colossus Statue review (http://www.whatsyourobsession.com/bowen-designs-colossus-full-size-statue-review/)

Colossus is one of my favourite characters, I'm picky about him. There aren't that many statues of him yet, and most of them look fairly iffy. A few of the busts are cool, but eh. The ones considered the best are the Sideshow Sentinel diorama version, the Hobbymaster custom, and this one. There's an additional one or two coming out that could well beat all of those, including an incredibly impressive 1/4th Colossus vs Juggernaut.

Looking at this one, I like a few things about it. The base is simple, but classy. The paint on it is great. He's painted just like he was always drawn in the comics, and I prefer the paint on this to my Hobbymaster Colossus. Unfortunately, there's a lot about this piece that doesn't do it for me.

I don't really like the pose. It seems unnatural to me. The lean on it is a bit strange as well. I just can't see Colossus being in this pose while threatening some sort of villain. I'd go so far as to say that's my primary problem with it. When I look at it, I just see the strange position he's in rather than the power of Colossus. I haven't heard many complaints like that about this statue, so maybe that's just me. Something about his mouth bothers me as well, maybe it's the teeth.

There's also the noted problem about one of his biceps being sculpted in an off-position, but you know what, that didn't bother me at all. I looked at it, yeah it's a little strange, but whatever, not a problem for me.

Overall, going with a 3.5/5. It's not a bad statue by any means, it's well liked and sure to be a great addition to most people's X-Men collections, it's just not for me. The chrome version puzzles me a bit as well. Chrome is cool and all, but since it's a comic version from a certain era...chrome makes it look a little strange? Ah well, to each their own!

Good review, Dr. Teng! I've got this statue, too, after going back-and-forth in debating on the chrome version. I finally decided I preferred this version overall. It's one of my favorite full-size statues. :) I don't have a problem with the pose. I do like that it seems to have a bit of a Dave C0ckrum flavor to it. :)

I'd like to see the chrome one to compare, I've seen pictures, but chrome is so hard to show properly in picture form.

Colossus is a popular character, so I know at some point Bowen will revisit him. I figure between that or Sideshow, it's only a matter of time until I get one that fully satisfies me.

Or I get good enough to repaint my HM one, either way!

3.5 / 5 = a "C" if this was an academic grading scale.

This statue is MUCH better than a "C".

I prefer using a wider range of my curve than the academic system, where roughly 50% of the curve is almost never used. I'll need to post my exact guidelines at some point, but 4 and up are reserved for statues I'm happy with.

I even make a point about that in the ending blurb.

The bicep problem knocks it from any chance of an "A" rating. "B" at best.

great review. odd that the review is years after the item was released but other than being a bit late. :) the chrome version is nice, but i sold mine for over $600. it's not that nice!

Yeah, I came into the statue collecting game later than most of you guys, so I'll probably have a few older reviews up in the next while. I'll toss in some of the more current Sideshow stuff I have too.

I agree, IMO this was one of Bowen's best sculpts. Perhaps Dr Teng is being a bit harsh on this one.
