From today's Guardian:

"The chunky black original Xbox might not have been the most aesthetically pleasing thing to put in your front room, but with 20m sold worldwide, Microsoft's machine has truly earned a place in today's entertainment culture.
The new Xbox 360 is an altogether sexier beast. Its Stormtrooper-white visage (the colour is called "chill") and streamlined design give it a much more desirable and futuristic appearance.

The system's 20GB hard drive equals the storage of a typical iPod, and is removable so that you can take it to a friend's house. It has cable-free controllers, wireless internet, and can play music and DVDs, ready to become the hub of digital entertainment in the home.

The console also embraces the era of high-definition television, with all its games supporting greater resolutions and impressive levels of realism. The basketball players shooting hoops in one game show off the incredibly realistic graphics; the rendering of the skin and movement of the players makes it almost like watching a movie.
But it is the needs of the video gamer, whether casual player or addict, that are at the forefront of the 360's design.

The console is easy to personalise, from the ability to choose your own soundtrack when playing all games, to clip-on panels so you can change the look of the case.

The internet, too, will form a crucial part of the 360's future. When you switch on the machine, you are presented with a "dashboard" with options for home, media, games and everything you have downloaded. You can also see whether your friends are online.

Users will be able to take advantage of video and voice messaging, and buy content through an online marketplace. Microsoft is also dedicated to attracting more players to its Xbox Live broadband service by allowing gamers much more freedom in managing their friends lists, profiles and preferences.

While the first Xbox aimed at the core gaming market, the 360 looks to bring casual and family gamers into the ever-expanding Microsoft fold."

Yeah, sounds interesting doesn't it. I'm going to wait to hear more, and maybe wait a bit after release for the inevitable price drop. I'm a bit of a 'dip-in' gamer, more than a compulsive one. There's just not enough time in the day...

I paid full price on the day of release for the original xbox, and the speed with which they dropped the price on it was shocking-you expect the price to drop after a while, but I think they lopped £100 off after only a few months. With this new one, this high-def business sounds interesting, but I dont know much about that, whether thats taking off in the UK or not? Looks like i might need a new TV as well then! :banghead:

Sky are introducing a high-def version of Sky+ next year I think. It's obviously the next big thing. But I'm pretty happy with standard digital definition, to be honest, so I don't know how well it will take off, especially if it's expensive; which, of course, it will be.

As soon as I get one, I'll let you guys know how it is. I got a couple of connections, so I will hopefully get one right away. I think MS is better than getting their product out than Sony anyway, so there won't be the same fiasco as when PS2's came out.

Besides, its for my damn birthday (end of October, xbox 360 is supposed to launch in Nov.). I got my wife that ipod photo for xmas ($600), she's GOTTA be right with the hook up...

2 bad things with this:
1 stupid kids drop things all the time, and dropping a hard drive is a no-no. :banghead:
2 removable hard drive, all I hear is "REPLACEABLE, UPGRADABLE, MODABLE" hard drive.
Any one wanna start a pool as to when the first people out there will be messing with this xbox?
It's amazing what people can do some times.

Hell yeah! I rigged my x-box so I could play Super Nintendo, Genesis, Neo Geo, Dreamcast games all that stuff! I can even copy Xbox games straight to the harddrive! (although I had to stop since I was running out of space and didn't want to buy a new harddrive like most ppl do). This new X-Box is gonna be alot more PC then console which means highly modable. The only selling point for me will be the games though. If the games suck why would I want all that? Just like the PSP they'r games blow.

I was really looking forward to this until I read on ign.com that the DVD drive is not going to be either HD-DVD or Blu-ray, just plain old DVD.
They are missing out on one of the biggest upcoming markets uptapped, if they had done this and made it backwards compatable with current games (that is not yet confirmed) it would have been a must-buy in my house.
What a shame they decided to go this way, I think Sony will have a leg up on the next gen race - and I LOVE my x-box...

just my two cents
:(

That's a very good point. Most new gen systems tend to have the latest tech, and not doing so can compromise the profits plus shift the interest of gamers everywhere. This might be were Sony takes over for good. Now if they can come up with a solid online network like X-Box live and a decent broadband rate, then it's gonna be real good.

I also think its a mistake for Microsoft not to use the newest dvd technology. You know Sony is gonna use this as a major marketing ploy for the PS3. Also, they better make the xbox 360 freakin' backwards compatible with the xbox games or I'm gonna be pissed. I absolutely love the xbox but it looks like with the next generation consoles I may be leaning towards going back to Sony and the PS3.

according to reports, the HardDrive version (XBOX 360 HD) is backwards compatible.

my current box is modded, it's the greatest piece of home entertainment equipment out there. and i'm not talking about the copying and such. the streaming media, networkable media between PCs and TV screen. it's awesome.

I'm more of a Rainbow Six 3 fan and I don't know why they're releasing Lockdown on the old xbox when the xbox 360 comes out just a couple of months later:confused:
There's also a rumor that Halo 3 and the new Playstation are going to be released at the same time :peoples:
I'll be stickin with xbox for a long time :)

Sweet! I've been (sporadically) looking for that info. Since the SO took the X-Boxes, the PS2, and all the games, I'm left with my PC. And I need my Dead or Alive fix!

If the 360 is backwards compatible, I'll hold out until it comes out.

My only gripe about Xbox 360 is that even though it's backwards compatible, there's no way of transfering the saved data from the xbox to the 360. I don't know about you guys but I went through HELL with Ninja Gaiden & to unlock the 3 8-bit version games. I would like to transfer the info from one system to another but there is no way of doing this.

Its not a rumor, it is stated from Bill Gates own mouth.

He said he wants to destroy the PS3, so when PS3 Comes out on opening day they will run into not only Halo 3 but also the movies release of Halo.
