Thanks, guys! To answer your q - It's a commission painting for sure but not one I directly commissioned. I was looking to acquire something from this artist and this became available. I then opted to buy this instead of arranging for a new commission. In this case, I got to see the piece in advance, thought it was a fabulous interpretation of the character, and went for it. As JG said, commissions can sometimes be hit and miss. From what I've been told by the original owner, this size piece (14 by 20 inches) is rather unusual as Esad typically uses 12 by 16 inch sized media for single character painted pieces. The size definitely played a role for me in acquiring this piece.
In person, the texture of the painting is quite striking, especially the portrait. Esad manages to blend the medieval with the contemporary so well. In this regard especially, he's truly in a distinguished element.
