"The Man" - A review
Hi Gang,
The better half and I saw "The Man" starring Samuel Jackson and Eugene Levy this afternoon. The storyline is pretty simple. Sam Jackson plays a hard-nosed Federal Agent out to nab these evil gun runners. Eugene Levy plays a suburban-type dental products salesman from Wisconson who is visiting Detroit to give a speech at a conference. Anyway, early on in the film, through a series of bizarre circumstances that could only occur in TinselTown, the gun runners mistakingly believe that the Eugene Levy character is the "The Man" meaning the guy who's looking to buy a truck load of stolen weapons. The original "Man" the gun runners were supposed to meet was Jackson (who was hoping to arrest them during a set up buy) but he was otherwise preoccupied at the time. Anyway, Sam has no choice but to enlist (more like force) Levy to play an integral part of a sting operation to bring these gun runners to justice.
Okay, so the plot is as thin as a Wendy's beef patty but don't let that bother you. Eugene Levy is hilarious. He steals the show and totally shines in every scene he is in. Sam Jackson isn't bad either, however, we've seen him play that sass-talking-hard-ass-type a billion times already. The bad guy in the flick could have been a more formidable foe. Then again, we rarely see great bad guys in flicks like this so you pretty much get what you expect on that score too. The film is also under 90 minutes so you never really get the feeling like the movie is dragging on towards Nowheresville.
All this to say that we enjoyed it. It's a safe rental, download, or whatever means you use to view poison. Worth seeing.
