Seperate attached parts

Strange title, since I find it hard to describe what I mean.

I’ve been doing some sculpting with super sculpey and got some pretty good results so far. I love the ability to rebake and all, and have about 3 finished statues so far… but there is one thing I’d like to get a tip on.

I’d like to make some parts separate from the beginning, to make it easier to cast later on. Details like flowy locks of hair on a characters forehead and such. I can make the head on its own first, all fine and well, but…

Any tips on how I can proceed to make that extra piece while it is somehow on the sculpt, and then remove it afterwards before baking it…? If I do this normally it ends up sticking to the prebaked part, and I can’t take it off easily without skewing it somehow, so it doesn’t fit anymore. And if I use a heatgun directly on the part where it is, I’m worried it gets stuck?

I hope you all know what I mean. Any tips?

Someone will probably know more about this but i would suggest using a bit of cling film between the head and the piece of hair your sculpting. You should be able to remove the hair once you've finished without it sticking.

best thing for this is normal washing up liquid, just smooth it on the area sculpt over and it pops right off

You can also use wax paste. This is the available at Walmart in the household cleaning section. It works good for me.

Interesting. I'll try some of it out and see how it goes! Thank you for the ideas so far.

Another idea, one that I have not tried, is to sculpt the removable part onto the baked sculpey piece, but don't use vaseline as a 'glue' as you would if you wanted the pieces to stick. After baking , the new piece might just be able to pop off. I saw a video on making eyes using a technique like this.
