¼ Scale Doctor Doom – Sideshow
Doctor Doom – Sideshow
Sculpted by Pablo Viggiano
Control/Art Direction: Martin Canale
Fabrication: Gidget Earle
Introduction: This is the fifth Premium Format piece from Sideshows now successful Marvel licence following on from Logan, Elektra, Green Goblin and Punisher. Premium format is not for everyone but it is hard to deny the sheer quality of these pieces. They have taken comic book collectibles onto another level alongside movie icons and justifiably so. Sideshow has successfully mixed the ¼ scale line between fully sculpted Marquette’s, which include Drake, Thing, Ironman, and Wolverine.

Doom Sculpt: The sculpting on this piece is nothing short of magnificent. 1/4 scale lends itself nicely to detailing the intricate endo-skeleton body of Doom and to his awe-inspiring throne. The armour sculpt is cast in polystone and painted silver to achieve the metal affect. The detailing around the gauntlet and mask is superb right down to the minuet rivets. The mask is not based on the classic marvel look but this does not diminish from the overall look.

Throne Sculpt: This has to be one of the most detailed sculpt to be released by any Marvel licensee. The four posts and back are painted in a bronze colour and provide beautiful detailing. In a way it’s a pity that there is so much detail on the piece and it makes for a difficult decision as to what way to display it. I know its been mentioned that a turntable tray would provide the optimum display but not everyone will have both the space and money to provide this piece with its rightful display. A simple pedestal which one can walk around might be an easier solution.

Fabric and Leather: The fabric to Dooms under cloak and over cloak is of good quality and it should be relatively easy to maintain. The detail is so fine on this piece and there is actually a sculpted 9mm broom handle Mauser in his holster. The belt can also be adjusted with the metal buckle. What’s more amazing is the Doom sculpt is actually fully sculpted beneath the clock. It is this level of detail which marks this out as one of the truly great pieces of comic-book art.

Exclusive: The exclusive Doom, which is offered solely through Sideshow, is identical to the regular edition except for the pedestal and chalice. Some of Sideshows exclusives have been poor but this is one of the better ones and really sets off the display.
Conclusion: This is without doubt one of the finest collectibles ever released under any licence. The sheer size, detailing and quality of sculpt and fabrication makes this piece a highly collectable piece. Pablo and Martin have once again produced a masterpiece. I find no reason other than display-ability to subtract any points from this piece. I would give this 10 out of 10.
