Question for the Audiophiles

Right now I have my HD set connected to my receiver via the digital tos link calbe (yeah I need to get a new receiver). Now. lets say I buy an HD DVD player and I buy a HDMI switch (my tv only has one HDMI) for my HD Cable and HD DVD Player. Let's say I also buy a new receiver with HDMI.
How does the connections work from the HD Cable, DVD Player, Switch, and Receiver?

Well, if the receiver has HDMI inputs & output (HDMI switching), it could be your switch. Of course, the downside is that you would have to turn on your receiver for the switching to occur. I'm not sure what happens to the signal if the reciever is off. I've always had enough connections to bypass that step.

The way that most systems are designed is for EVERYTHING to feed into the receiver. This way all the audio is coming out through your speakers. You then have a video cable which goes from the receiver to the TV.

Depending on what sort of receiver you have, I'm sure there will be some sort of video signal loss, though I don't know if you'd be able to tell or not.

I have a Yamaha receiver with two HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. I have my Directv going into one HDMI port on the receiver with my HD-DVD and PS3 running through an HDMI switch connected to the second HDMI input. The HDMI out runs into the TV, works great with no noticeable signal loss!
