Yes.
Batman doesn't need any side kick. But he needs people to go on what he started (his war on crime). So he trains Robin, Batgirl etc. But doesn't need them to do the job. They work mostly different areas of the city. Gotham is a really big city, they don't even bump each other.
It's having your cake and eating it. You have loner Batman and you have Batgirl, Robin, Spoiler etc.
