I'd pick What if because there were many more stories and variety than Elseworlds. I really enjoyed them as a kid.

But can anyone name a What if story that comes close to the greatness of DC's Kingdom Come? The Korvac/Avengers issue was pretty cool though.

Man, that's tough... What I liked so much about What If? (1st series) is that it took a pivotal event in the MU and showed how a change, large or small, led to a vastly different outcome. Consequently, the writers really had to be up on their Marvel continuity, and the readers could geek out on the details. But the stories were really hit and miss.

For the most part, Elseworlds is just viewing the same characters in different situations: different times, places, whatever. They are "reimaginings" (oh how I hate that term). There's no real cause and effect as many of them claim there is. But Kingdom Come and Batman/Superman: Generations are two of my favorite comic stories.

So I really can't say. I choose not to decide!

Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations?

What If? was great. The current series falls short.

The new What Ifs for the most part do suck, I agree. The fact that they're one-shots sort of relieves them of all sorts of responsibilities, like art, writing, and editing. And it shows. There's an exception here or there, but in general, they're not good.

Especially as opposed to Volume one of What If?, which was for the most part pretty great. Well done, and lots of fun.
