Commission Inquiry - Having the Pencils and Inks done on Separate Boards

Hi Guys,

I'm in the midst of having a rather ambitious commission done by a notable published artist - however, I'm stuck with the dilemma of whether or not to have inks and pencils done on separate boards (as opposed to over the original pencils).

As you know, the subtleties of raw penciled art are sometimes lost under the inks - thus, the benefit of having both pencils and inks done as separate pieces.

The catch, however, is that there's an additional fee for it - I'm being asked for approximately one-forth of the original commission charge for the inks to be done over a Blueline copy instead.

However, the artist has offered to send me a scan of the finished pencils on 11"x17" board along with the inked piece for no extra charge, should I decide to not pay more.

What do you guys think?

it really depends on the pencils.
can you wait and see the pencils before making your decision? if the pencils are really good, Zombie would go with getting both.

Well, as far as I look at it - you'd have two pieces of art vs one piece of art and a copy of the art

For me it depends on the inker, if it is someone who inks directly onto the artist's pencils in comic books then I trust them do do the same on commissions. If they are not the artist's regular inker or they are but only do lightbox inking or on blueline copies then I would go for that.

I would see what the pencils look like and then decide on the inking, as some artists pencils are not as tight as others

Ok, thanks for the opinions guys; I've decided to get the inks done on a separate blueline copy, since I enjoy his pencils as much as his inks.

Will post scans when they're done!
