Wow, you guys actually agree too!?? Everywhere I read everyone is PRAISING Batman 17. As an overhyped crossover it failed miserably.

Ending was lame. No one died. A buildup to nothing.

It was called Death of the Family. When a marriage dies that doesn't mean one of the spouses dies. It's the marriage that ends. If the family dies, it means the death of the family unit rather than any one person. Bruce's family unit is devastated now and the implication is that they may no longer be a family.

Still, as with Court of Owls, I felt the story up to the ending was great but the ending was awful. I'm doubting Snyder's chops as a superhero writer now.

Infighting among members of the Bat-family is considered a new thing? What exactly happened here to make things appear different or worth reading this time around?

Something like this -
Joker made it seem he knew everyone's identities and Bruce was supposedly aware of this and never let others in. We later learn that Joker apparently doesn't care who they are (and may not even know who they are) as Bruce went to visit Joker at Arkham and Joker refused to look at or acknowledge him.

I just read this Death of the Family storyline featuring the Joker. He was disturbing as he should be, and I thought the writing was very effective. I actually felt fear from each of Batman's under study's, and from the Bat himself. The Joker is a frightening character, and I thought they did a good job representing that. The ending happened so fast, too fast, after the build up the storyline, but I still thought this storyline overall was good. A solid ending would have made it great though.
