Disparities in art quality

While I long for the days of the house style, I recognize that there is amazing work being done out there. There is also unbelievable crap that is getting published that never would have seen the light of day 30 years ago.

How can a competent (nothing special, but competent) cover like this

occupy the same shelf as amateurish garbage like this?

It's like half the people getting published never went to art school.

Other than it being somewhat boring, I don't see anything wrong with that second cover. I've seen much worse comic art.

I agree with statman. I certainly wouldn't call it amateurish.

I think both look fine.

I will say a lot of artists these days have found they can make more money off their work outside of comics. So many of my favorites rarely draw in comics, or just do covers.

I mean Jim Lee drew all the time when I was a kid, but I don't think he's done a run in a while. He can sketch something online in an hour and fully expect someone to give him $500-1000 for it. When that is possible why would put time toward interior panels?

I agree with all the comments. Neither looks amateurish to me. Just different styles is all. Both have their merits.

The challenge with art is style and personal tastes. There are some artist that are beloved and held in high regard that just aren't my cup of tea while I like some that people consider poor.

In general I prefer distinct style while having realistic and not overly stylized proportions. The image SoniCobra posted is overly angular for me with blocky feeling. Once it leaves the realm the somewhat understood anatomy it just doesn't appeal to me.

Here's an example of style choices

Now, I actually think the female figure looks quite good here, but the interpretation of Wolverine is visually off putting to me. The neck goes past stylized to me into unappealing to look at. I'm sure some people love this take, and I'm not bashing a clearly talented artist, but I'm not going to say I like it.

I like the art style in the second cover much more than the first.
