I do believe the white costume was stumbled upon. But when introduced it caught on to the masses as a good look for the team. It popped against Storm's dark skin, and stood out when in a group pic with the other teammates.
Again, the best look for her IMHO.

Here's what I posted a while ago in the XM Storm thread. As many pics you can show where it looks more white, I can show you an equal or greater number of comic images where it is silver

You keep saying this like it's true. If you see it constantly in the comics, you'd prefer the real color of her suit - silver.
I'm so over animated series fans jacking up the Jim Lee suit color. It's silver. It was created as silver. Have some respect for its origins. I LOVE TAS, but I do not want my statue to be the color from a cartoon while everything else is comic accurate.
But really, to make us all happy - variants

Jim Lee Storm has been showcased in silver, white, and everything in between. This is true in the comics, fan art, fantasy art, cosplay, toys, etc. It all boils down to personal preference.

Exactly! We can trade pictures all day long and find a multitude of color variations. My preference is definitely WHITE! Again, it stands out better IMHO.

Love the Pearlised White that Bowen had painted onto theirs. If Koto can replicate even that paint job keeping the paint job vibrant and bright , I'd be more than happy. Let's see which of the Xmen is announced first. Personally I'd be happy with a Professor X in his hover Chair before anyone else. The Bowen ones terribly out of scale. Prof. X, Storm, Nightcrawler it's a win either way.

You can claim this all you like. But when Jim Lee was doing the artwork for the actual comic books, her costume was silver. The Animated Series made it white, and then fan art and cosplay you are speaking of followed.
As for which version people want - you are correct, it's all down to preference.
