That's true. That's not my intention when watching shows like that (if and when I ever do). But I'm talking about what's portrayed to gay youth who may or may not have access to a support system. (The internet probably is a big resource, but ultimately, it's not.) Those kids watch those shows, and immediately try to relate to the gay people, because they don't have the same high school experiences that teach them how to be an adult. They have to learn it from TV and other sources. So, when a kid -like- me (not just like me, but similar) turns on those shows and sees a man screaming like a woman about fabric or whatever, it's not something he can relate to, and he's further alienated.
Ask me and Jesse about coming out before there was internet, or cable movie channels. Ask us who our role models were. The most visible gays for us were Paul Lynde and Liberace. Now, do I seem like I could relate to either of those people?
