Also if all is fine and looks to be working you might need to go into the Xbox network settings and reset them so the 360 can find the new IP.

Sounds like what Frankie said -- your missing the modem.
I plug straight into the modem as well. In my case it's the Motorola "surfboard" modem. This is how my xbox sets up. The modem has about 5 ports I can plug in to.
Nothing is plugged into the router except the power source and modem.
Xbox should fire right up so all you'd need is your email/password to play online.

I am not complete hooked up myself yet.
I used my moms internet. LOL.
I just thought I would give it a try before I bought my own internet.
There's no modem... Beside the router ,there's a box that is plugged into the internet socket (the one in the wall) that box is also used for the phone. Could that be the modem?

That is prob. the cable modem, and if she has both Internet and phone then that's what you need.
Take out the internet Cable going to the Wall, put it into the Wan port of your router. Then get 2 cables and from port 1 go to your X-Box and from port 2 re-hook up your Mom's internet by putting it back in the wall.

Ah, independence. When I moved out the first time, there wasn't even internet, ha. I think I had a VCR and a SNES.
