Definitely agree; "John Rambo" worked .. well.. sort of
.. because everyone knows Stallone played Rambo in previous movies; you know what you're in for.
Same with "Rocky Balboa", same with "Hellboy", for sh!t's sake; obviously "Hellboy" isn't going to be a movie about the wild world of knitting.
Adding "of Mars" would've netted them $5 more million, at least. People would immediately know it's sci-fi; not everyone watches previews (let alone tv), nor has time for them.

Not saying it would make much difference to the numbers, but a film just called John Carter could literally be about anything - an unhappy tax accountant suffering with impotence, for example - but "John Carter of Mars" would put you more in mind of what to expect!
