I always bake multiple times for the same reasons.

That said I have a question:

- How many times can you bake sculpey/FIMO ?

I don't do it more than 3x. And even then, the 1st and 2nd times are not complete (the full 15-20 min).

wrinkles on baked sculpey

I have a question for DaddyVader -
You say you find it easier to add wrinkles and such to baked sculpey. How do you do that if it's already baked hard. I'm relatively new to sculpey, and always though that wrinkles were better to add whilst the clay is soft.
Can you enlighten me?

awesome thread.

It answered the question i was gonna ask.

im going to use a heat gun on the base area of the sculpt im doing, so i can handle it without messing up the detail.

Thanks for the tips.

Dumpindog...

it is sometimes expedient to add wrinkles and folds after the anatomy is finished and baked. that way you don't dig into the anatomy with a deep fold. it will stop at the "skin" as it were. many times I find that all I need to do is add only the material neccisisary to represent the cloth that actually raises above the skin in a fold or wrinkle... much of the surface of the clothing is too thin to have to fully apply.

it is also easier to get sharp edges to clothing that lay against the skin. like a tank top or halter strap (for the girl figures)

SS does shrink a little (sometimes as much as 3%), so repeated full bakes may cause unequal shrinkage of added detail. most of the time it is not an issue if the added detail is minimal in thickness. a partial bake, as mentioned above, will cause less uneven shrinkage for subsequent bakes.

I use sculpy deluent (used to recondition sculpy) or petroleum jelly to baked sculpy before additions. brush on a thin coating and wipe off any excess. sometimes I will make a "slip" by liquifying a bit of SS with deluent with a small stiff brush, then brushing that on the baked sculpy.

just my 2 cents

Chuck

Hi all,
Firstly I new here...my first posting...
Been reading the treads in this forum as I wish to embark on my first sculpt...
I have no freaking idea on basically anything on sculpting...
All of you are helpful in providing information...thanks !!!
Thanks for sharing your experiences !!!...The GODS of sculptor do actually post on this forum

Some question on baking (may sound stupid... )

1. Can one use a hairdryer (at hottest heat) to harden sculpey...???

2. What material base do you use to hold up your model/figure in the oven...???
I've see sculptors showing their w.i.p pieces on wooden base, I assume that wooden base goes into the oven too.

3. Is it safe to use the oven for cooking once it has been used to bake sculpey???

Thanks !!!

hairdryers may not get hot enough, heat guns will strip paint off a car. best way is test it and see if it works.

I attach my armatures to a wooden base for ease in sculpting and baking. baking wont affect the wooden base.

sculpey is none toxic so its definately safe to use oven after baking. I find its best to bake at night when its not needed by the wife and also to let it sit in the oven overnight to cool and minimize cracks.
