I usually don't like Console DVD players, but should I buy the XBOX HD PLAYER or just buy the Toshiba HD DVD player?

I've heard good things about the XBox HD player but I doubt that it can compare to the Toshiba HD-A2. I have a Toshiba HD-A1 and am getting the A2 as soon as it comes our (now scheduled for December 12). These players are exceptional values for their price. At $500, yes it's $300 more the the XBox player but you get your money's worth, hands down. I can't say enough good things about the Toshiba, I love mine to death. And, as Ghost mentioned, nbot only does it play HD DVDs it is an awesome upconverting player for SD DVDs and an exceptional CD player. I don't think the Xbox can offer you that. Toshiba hands down over the Xbox player if the extra money is not a big issue. I also know of one retailer who is offering the Toshiba at a discount with 2 free DVDs from him and 3 free from Toshiba. That is not a bad deal at all.

I don't think it will unconvert standard DVDs.

Zurb, I am not sure why you edited my post but your addition to my post was wrong. The 360 HD DVD drive DOES upconvert standard DVD's but through VGA output only. I was only talking about the HD DVD side as the OP was asking about HD DVD's and didn't mention needing to upconvert standard DVD's.

Well i printed out the coupon and went to the local CC by me. The hardest thing was finding one that had it in stock. I ended up having to buy it at one and drive to pick it up at another. But the 40 bucks off was a breeze so i didnt mind. I would have liked to get the new toshiba, but i can't bring myself to spend that kind of cash on something without a clear winner in this format war yet. If HD-DVD is obsolete in a couple of years I won't look back and totally regret this purchase.

Sorry about that! I actually meant to quote your post and add that upconvert line as my own. I must have hit edit instead of quote, never realized it and my words ended up on your post. I'll take that line out. I didn't think it did upconvert and only mentioned it as it was another benefit of the standalone player that I thought was not available on the Xbox unit. I stand corrected.

There is no HDMI output for the 360 yet.
Maybe they are working on it for the future, but not now.

Just like the Wii there is already a DVD version of it coming out in Japan. And while the standard Wii right now only has 480p output with component cables, there's rumours of HD versions coming out which makes me feel sick since watching anything under 720 on a large set, makes it look queasy.
Still even the cables are hard to track down from Nintendo.
