no ... I put myself in their shoes and I would like to be able to do it every con but after doing so many I would imagine that there are reasons that I would not want to do it from time to time and they should have the latitude to do what they want. Now the artists that don't do it at all ... I don't understand
as a fan, I appreciate it a lot ... even if I don't buy something from an artist ... I enjoy watching the creative process at times

personally I think it would be the cool thing to do, even if it is just simple sketches. Some people drive very far distances to see the artists and a little something would be nice to remember the meeting by. Of course I also wish someone would invent a machine to tell if a person requesting a sketch was just going to sell it on ebay or not so that the artist could just move on to the next person.

I'm firmly in the camp that doesn't believe artists should have to sketch at shows if they don't wish to. Many of them attend shows at their own cost and make themselves available by signing books and offering sketchbooks and prints.
Obviously I would prefer to see them sketching but I respect their right not to sketch if that's their wish.
As for an earlier comment regarding Stuart Immonen choosing to no longer sketch at cons, you should get a copy of Stuart's "50 Reasons to Stop Sketching at Conventions" book which explains things beautifully. It's painful and hilarious at the same time Best,
Royd

I completely agree. I will add though (since there are a lot of people who attend to get sketches, myself included) that if the artist DOESN'T do sketches/commissions at cons, and they have a website or blog...make that info known. They'll save a lot of headache at the show, and fans that check online will appreciate it.

It really doesn't bother me. If they can't be bothered to sketch, I just move on to the next artist that will.

I wish. If you look at my purchases from each show I usually walk away with a few pieces. I bet I average 3-7 pieces per show. I am blown away when people leave conventions with 20+ commissions.

I dont think artists should have to draw anything if they dont want to. If I saw Michael Jordan, I dont expect him to grab a basketball and dribble. Why should I expect when I see an artist to draw me something.
We see actors at cons. No one expects them to recite us a few lines from their movie/tv show?
But then again. There are just nice artists out there who will draw and draw for free.
Jim Lee comes to mind. The man can draw like a machine!! Yet his book is still late all the time! =P

I think their only responsibility would be to sign at least one item for a fan. Besides that its just gravy if you can pick up a sketch.
