Gotta respond to this For me, Raney's best work is from the mid-90's. That is when he did the Warlock titles, Stormwatch and some Uncanny X-Men. But I guess he got more 'known' after he did Thor and Outsiders
Check out this page from my website:

My favorites:
-Tom Raney
-Bryan Hitch
-Stuart Immonen (Loved him on Legion of Superheroes and Thor, but he changed his style and sorry to say IT SUX!)
-Tex
-Jae Lee
-Jim Lee (I loved him in the 90's, but it misses a certain oomph now)
-Travis Charest (his work is awesome, hard to believe he was one of those Jim Lee clones)
-Carlos Pacheco
-Adam Hughes
-Mike Mignola
-Stelfreeze
to many I still want to mention so I'll stop

There are a few artists on here that while good, I would not consider for this list. Any artist in the top ten must be able to put out a monthly book on time. If they can't do that, then they may be an artist, but not a true comics professional.

IMO, Jim Lee is nothing without Scott Williams finishing his stuff for him. The same thing can be said of Byrne, whose art is no where near as nice without Austin inking him (have you seen Byrnes self inked stuff???).

The problem with questions like this is it is rare to see actual pencils as opposed to an inked or fully finished page. Artists like Jim Lee and John Byrne have tought me the importance of a good inker to finish things off. There is also the fact that many artists mentioned (Hughes especially) don't intend for Pencils to be a finished work, so there are things missing from their artwork which are supposed to be filled in with inks and colors. So, it's hard to say how good a "penciler" some of these artists are as opposed to how good an "artist" they are.

My favorite Penciler is obviously Ron Lim, with Art Adams a close second. And I can honestly say that Rons Pencils are WAY better than anything he has had printed (though Milgrom and Austin are very good at inking Rons work). Art Adams work is unbeatable so long as he is inking himself.

Jae Lee hasn't been mentioned enough for me.

Michael Turner doesn't warrant a place on this list, he is far too inconsistent.

Jim Lee is a great event artist but he doesn't lay out a great story.

I might be shot down in flames for this, but I think Rags Morales is one of the best artists at telling a story, his layouts, the emotion he can convey, astounding. He poured his emotion into every panel of Identity Crisis. He isn't afraid of trying things most artists wouldn't to tell a story.

Chris Bachelo started well with Gen X, but I think his penchant for making everone look like cherubs got too strong in his later work.

Carlos Pacheco's work on Avenger's forever was great too, his work on X-Men, not so good.

I love Esad Ribic's painted masterpieces in the Loki mini series.

Sometimes he puts Ross to shame.
