Little of both. I'll keep some of the harder to find ones MIP (like convention excluisves) but pretty much open everything else.

I have hundreds of unopened Star Wars, Toybiz Marvel Universe and X-Men figures, Batman Animated Series and numerous other lines still in the package but have been stored away for years. I used to have them all over my walls in my old house but it just got way out of hand. Once I got into statue collecting in the late 90s, I slowly boxed most of the figures and put them away.
I was basically done with figures until the Marvel Universe line started up. Now I buy the ones I really like but I open them and have them on shelves above my desk.

I think opened action figures look cheap and tacky displayed.

However row upon row of packaged figures adds to the clutter and space taken up and makes your house look like a flea market or store. I got out of action figures altogether and only buy the odd ones that go into the kids toy box for them to enjoy as well.

If I simply wanted to stare at unopened toys all day I'd go Toys R' Us. I would still get to see all the new stuff and never have to spend a dime.

I open all my action figures. Not planning on selling them, why not display them.

I'm a collector so by nature I collect. If there is a figure I like I buy it. When I have enough figures I put them in a box and write the inventory on the box and pack them really nice and put them away.
I have expendable income and I like knowing that I have the things I like. I don't have to alway see them. I know some would make the argument that I can't enjoy them. But I enjoy collecting and keeping my collection mint. So to me, it's money well spent.

I keep some MIB, and some opened for display.
But I keep a lot of action figures MIB. Statues, I display them, but I have limited space in my room, so some of thme are still in boxes but get rotated sometimes for display.

The next time somebody wants to see pics, I'll go to TRU and photograph the whole action figure aisle.
