My 70-200 F2.8L is a great portrait lens, but I have not practiced portraits much and I'm unsure of positioning and a good F stop to use.

Did you take this pic in a studio (looks like it from the catch lights in her eyes)? Multiple lights? Reflectors? Soft box? The lighting is great. Nice shot.

Yes, it was taken in a studio, with natural light and a white fill card.
It was taken with my $80 50mm 1.8, trade you for the $1200 70-200
Don't have the exif in front of me but, it's definitely something in the middle, probably f/4 or something around that. I want to have her features in focus.
The 70-200 2.8L is indeed a great portrait lens, and you should have no problem separating the subject from the background by opening it up-- or else have them move closer towards you and away from the BG.
I did just upgrade my telephoto to the 70-200 F4L-- can't wait to start taking portraits with that. It's utterly wowed me so far.
