18 years here, and I’m 36 years old. So that means that I’ve been married for half my life! I’m happy, but I’m not going to fool myself by saying it doesn’t come with its fair share of headaches…but I admit to be extremely happy with my life. I love my wife and children.

I'm with my partner for over 10 years. We have two wonderful children and never once, did we consider getting married. Then again, I come from Montreal, otherwise known as the shack-up capital of the world. I think half the population here under 50 just lives together... lol

The difference is (I'm told) that in Europe, a civil union gives you all the same rights and responsibilities as a traditional marriage ... if that would have been the case here, I think that civil unions would have been more well received.
And personally, I didn't and don't take offense to your comment. I find it difficult to believe that with a divorce rate over 50% within the first few years of "marriage" that there's much respect for the institution.
And as for the "religious" implications, I could care less, I don't want my union "blessed" by an organization that doesn't even want to exist! I'm perfectly happy having my wedding, nuptials, ceremony (whatever you want to call it, frankly I'm not even sure myself) on the beach with a few dozen of my closest friends, and family who want to be there, rather than in a building that doesn't.

Nice. We have had gay marriage here in Mass for a while and there has been no armageddon the detractors feared.
