Think of it this way:
The Phantom Menace ----------- refers to the Sith
Attack of the Clones ====== about the beginning of the Empire
Revenge of the Sith ====== about the Sith's ultimate rise to power with the Empire as their army
A new Hope ====== Luke a future Jedi, and hope for all the galaxy to defeat the Sith and the Empire
The Empire Strikes Back ------- refers to the Emperor and Vader's plans to stop the rebellion and Luke
Return of the Jedi ----------- Luke becomes a Jedi, the Sith are defeated, Empire is defeated
The Force Awakens ------------- everything starts over with a new Sith enemy and return of some form of the Empire (I'm guessing from the trailers)
If the Sith are defeated in the Force awakens, they'll have to come back even stronger in episode 8 because the Sith are the ones who use the dark side of the Force and it being awakened, there will be a struggle between it's 2 sides. I think the title "the Force Awakens" means that as long as the Force is awakened, the 2 sides will struggle as they always have. It is the Dark side of the Force that will bring about more Sith to wield it's power. It makes sense that episode 8 will not be centering on the empire returning to power, but rather a stronger Sith enemy must rise, one that once again threatens the galaxy, and more importantly threatens to destroy any Jedi. I expect part 8 to have the word Sith in the title. We'll see.
