I've had bear before, but bear steaks aren't the way to eat the meat; most people make bear sausages or the like.

In Michigan, and I assume many other states as well, deer are like rabbits and have to be culled in order to control overpopulation, otherwise they die of disease and starvation.
Hunting is necessary as well as recreational.

True in Illinois and Colorado, too, from personal experience. Colorado also has a huge elk issue, and as someone said a few pages back, elk meat is pretty darn good!

LOL!
Bottom feeding fish like catfish, sturgeon, carp and other sucker species are eating things where litter, animal waste and pesticide residue from runoff farm areas have settled. Some of these fish were studied and found to contain a high level of PCB (polychlorinated Biphenyl)which is toxic.
Where as specialists have not found traces of this in other species in the same rivers. The Department of Health and Environment in Kansas issued an advisory against eating bottom feeding fish due to this. Naturally I'd rather eat trout, salmon, bass, walleye or fish from spring fed lakes.
As the Lake Perch in Lake Michigan contain high levels of mercury there are certain drawbacks to my theory. But either way, I think my paranoia comes into play at some point.

As much as I love catfish, I don't eat it anymore unless it's farmed. And it deserves mentioning that the whole "bottom-feeder" issue becomes pretty much null and void when they're farm-raised. Still good eating, but I'm glad I live in trout country now.

They come up to our cabin all the time, drink from the lake right out front. They're quite a sight, believe me.
Still, they have to be hunted, or they'd destroy a lot of the landscape, since we've driven off most all of their former natural predators.
