pharmaceutical costs and insurance companies are the two major reasons our health care in america is unaffordable to most and failing taxpayers. according to your train of thought, they're just breaking even. they're among the richest and most profitable companies in america.

True innovation takes guts. Industry-wide, new drugs on average cost about $800 million and take up to 12 years to develop. More than 90 percent of the drugs in clinical development never reach the market, including half of those that make it to late-stage clinical trials. That's why so many big drug companies are running out of new drugs. For a long time it was easier and lucrative enough to pursue what Vishva Dixit, vice president of research, calls the "detergent" strategy -- creating me-too drugs in big established markets as if they were laundry soap, and then spending big bucks on marketing to steal share from rival pharmas.

so you're saying that anyone with a theory deserves to have money thrown at them? my cure for alzheimer's is don't get old. please make your check payable to.....
usually studies that are successful are based on proven methods or conditions and are built upon those already established as viable progress.
do the math hawk. there have been hundreds, maybe even thousands of studies on discovery and treatment of AD. still there is no cure or treatment to reverse or even stop the progression of the disease. the odds are astronomical that this one is going to be the cure. sure would be nice but it's highly unlikely. i'll reserve hope until i've seen something a little more viable than progress on a fruit fly.

sounds like a money motivated, cutthroat industry. but they've got heart because somebody who takes their drugs may benefit.
and why do you think it costs $800 million to develop a drug for market? because there's many hands out getting their share.

So lets stop spending / investing any money on AD then.

please educate yourself and stop spreading false hope to 5 million people in america that suffer from AD, not to mention the caregivers and their families. here's a great resource with facts about the disease.

Oddball, you're showing your ignorance to an even higher level than you normally do.
If not for experiments on lower life forms science wouldn't have developed vaccines against polio.
And then to tell people to educate themselves like you're a research scientist. You're too ignorant to even comment on this subject.
Granted, stories like this (if true) means that science is probably years away from actually producing sample trials it's still a step forward.

seriously, people would rather help children charities and even dogs and cats before the elderly in this country. the aged are simply thrown away in america.
case in point. as a non-profit, we hold several fundraisers a year to keep our services free for caregivers and families. the aspca had a fundraiser and raised more money in one day than we do all year. and our local county has close to 20,000 people that suffer from AD! it's disgraceful.
