Knowing that might offer an anwser to the question, as it would represent a moment in time,
when Sideshow felt the need to label a 1/4 PF as something other than a 1/4 PF

I can't say for sure but I believe they were first used for movie pieces like Predator and the Alien warrior from Aliens.
The first comic character to get the maquette designation was Thanos on throne.

Wasn't it first released as a PF and was listed at a specific price and then when there was feedback that was shared and posted and there had been some disappointment expressed by fans.....it then went back into production, there were some tweeeks made.....some added pieces to the base and then all of a sudden it reached 'maquette' status....?
and then the price was raised,..?

Price was never raised because they never revealed what the premium format pricing was. However, it is true that it was designated a PF originally. I always saw it as an excuse to raise the price because the engineering was not all that complex.

Thanos wasn’t the first comic character to be a maquette. I know Galactus and Sentinel was before him. Might have been others before too.

Ahh you are right. I do believe he was the first 1/4 maquette.

I somewhat believe this is the case at the present time. To market a specific statue that SSC put more attention to than normal.

I agree with this ...but also because it seems a Maquette is a tad more special than a PF. For example, Thanos on Throne and Rogue in flight pose were given extra attention to make them just a tad more special than a PF.

Highest Prices - Maquette
Higher Prices - Premium Format
Just High Prices - Everything else.
Even Sideshow employees don't have any real idea nor does history provide any grand definition.

Exactly ...but it's Sideshow that makes the determination what will be a Maquette and what will be a PF. Sometimes we don't see or understand their reasoning.

I don't think Maquette means 1/4. Maquette does not adhere to a scale.
I believe the Hulk and Wolverine Maquette was 1/5 as an example.
