Gandalf for me.
I agree that Rutger Hauer (as he is, not necessarily younger) would have made a great Magneto.
Ian McKellan (born 1939) and Rutger Hauer (born 1944) are in the same age group as Patrick Stewart (born 1940--gotta love www.imdb.com) to be considered contemporaries but Hauer resembles the Magneto as drawn by the likes of Jim Lee.

I really do always think of him as "Death" from Last Action Hero.

Thanks for pointing that out. It's been corrected. This was a very simple thread just asking folks to choose between the two genre related roles. Wasn't looking for anything else or implying that these were his only two and/or best roles.

Yeah, I was meaning that I would have liked to have seen Rutger Hauer play the part of Magneto when he was younger. About the age he was when he was in Ladyhawke........

Gandalf for me.
I could see other actors playing Magneto, but I can think of no one better than Ian to bring Gandalf to life!
