Yeah, same here! I purchased it when I bought the two macro lenses for the XTi but haven't gotten around to using it. Going to try and run some photos through it later. BTW grats on the your new Canon 40D. I have the Jan. issue of "Digital Photography" here and there is an article on it, going to read it.

Elements is a watered down version of photoshop.
Elements was developed to attract the Paint Shop Pro crowd. Many of the features that PS has (ie Curves, Channel Mixer, Color Balance, CMYK, channels, calculations and running actions) are not readily available in Elements.
The good thing about Elements, however, is that it is focused on Photography. Unfortunately though, as stated, features that are very easy to accomplish in PS need "work-arounds" in Elements.
The latest version and most complete version is Photoshop C3 Extended coming off of the Adobe Master Collection. This is the version that I use at work. At home I use CS2 on my laptop and Photoshop 7 on my workstation. I love 7.
Hope this helps.

Yeah sometimes I find it painful, depends on where I have the camera.

Oh ok, thanks CMA3, yes I remember seeing this Photoshop C3 Extended version at the shop. This looked more like professional grade software MUCH more expensive and extensive than what I got.

No problem. For your needs and since you never used PS before, Elements is perfect. Also look at Digital Photography Pro on the canon cd. It is awesome and I would probably use it over Elements, especially for RAW, and its free.
EDIT: Added:
Frankly, the Extended version of PS is only needed if you are doing post production of 3d to 2d work. There are also some speciaized MATLAB and DICOM stuff integrated as well.

Yeah DPP was included with the XTi. I remember the person in the shop told me about the C3 Extended version being more for 3D to 2D work like you said, and video and movie editing I believe but I'm not sure.

Absolutely right. Thats the only reason I use the extended for and some minimal 3d post stuff for our Cisco network implementation maps. But I always end up in either Premier or After Effects for full video production (mostly training videos).
