The knowledge that stuff can be turned into cash quickly is only relevant if I'm worried about needing to turn to my statue for cash in a pinch.

Turning to my statues for cash in a pinch means I'm either spending too much on statues, or don't have enough put away for emergencies.

If I spend an amount I can afford to 100% lose, all this goes away. Sure, I don't get as many pieces as I'd like and have to be disciplined, but I also don't have to worry about values and market saturation because I'm not relying on my statues as an asset.

It makes the hobby more fun for me approaching it this way; like a kid with his toys. Your mileage may vary, but it works for me.
We think alike, I've been saying this up and down. Well I've since stopped because my goodness did people flame me because how dare I point out that people flip their statues for that new thing.

People who don't "collect" per se but just have 1 or 2 statues. Not collections. You know... sane people

So catering to one time buyers rather than repeat customers?

If those one time buyers make up a large portion of sales then yes. It's been said multiple times that people with large collections do not make up the large part of sales on each statue, but more over, it's single sales of casual buyers or people who only want two or three statues that make up more of the market.

It's just like movies of known properties, you try to appease the fans, but you also have to make it accessible to the mainstream audience because they are the larger portion of ticket sales.

Ah so they cater to the guy that gives them money once vs the people who have accounts set up and order multiple items per year. Makes sense. When does one become a 'collector'? After two or three purchases?

Sucks doesn't it? But, the sad reality is most companies do this. Same reason why cable and cell phone companies give awesome deals to new customers while their long-time customers are stuck paying much higher monthly fees. It's all about the new business and not about the long-time business. Same thing happens in my favorite MMO. When updates are made they cater to the bad players (the majority) over catering to the really good players (the minority).
