To work out the VAT it's:
(cost of item + postage) x exchange rate x 0.2
www.xe.com is good for working out the first part - input the total in dollars and it'll give you the equivalent GBP value and then multiply this by 0.2.

Has anyone had to provide Fedex with a commodity code to get the Duty removed from an invoice ?
The last few invoices i'd had that had Duty applied, all i done was provide older invoices without it on and they just removed it. But now that are asking for this commodity code and the only way i can get that is if i get in contact with HMRC.
I'm getting so frustrated with Fedex as they take about 3 weeks to reply to emails and there just isn't any consistency to these invoices.

It should be available online. I had a similar problem with Irish customs. Rang them up and told them they were not accurate with the description and were applying the wrong code. Took a while but got it sorted. Wasn't included on my latest invoice for Black Widow. No doubt I'll be going through it again in the future but at least I have emails from customs and FedEx confirming the use of correct codes.

Yeah online. I think it's EU website. I'll see if I can find a link.

tbh I think customs make it up as they go along, most of the time it's a case of "think of a number and double it" when it comes to charges.
