I saw it theatrically myself, though I was only 14 it had a profound effect on me. I remember my Father who was a Vietnam Veteran himself saying to me after the film that it was the most realistic depiction of the war he'd ever seen. He was visibly shaken by it.
I got my Blu-ray today and just had to watch it. I'm going to watch a few more war movies in the days leading up to Memorial Day. I traditionally do themed blocks of movies around certain holidays.

amazing movie!! I went to see it in the theater when I was in HS also. Took my dad who grew up watching John Wayne war movies so this was a shocker for him.

I've heard about other men who fought in the war having that same reaction. There's no better critic, than someone who lived through it, I would imagine. I mean Stone himself was a vet, so I would expect nothing less.

Wow you guys really love Platoon. It was a fine movie but I wouldn't say a 10 by any means. I'd give it a solid 8.
