Here's the latest.

Steven Spielberg told Access Hollywood: "No! No! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.”

Now Quentin Tarantino told EW something similar: “I could so care less. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.”

-------------------

I would have liked to seen Spielberg take his shot at it. Couldn't care less about Quentin's 2cents. Still leaves us with JJ, and although a long shot, Peter Jackson & James Cameron...

SW has a certain look and feel, and even though the prequels weren't great and Lucas does not know how to direct actors, he is great at overall visual direction. You still need him as a kind of "producer emeritas" overseeing how the SW universe works (midicloreans aside), as long as any other wonkey ideas or characters (Jar Jar) can be vetoed. I'm kind of hoping for Brad Bird, with Abrams as the second choice. Spielberg had his run on the blockbuster franchises in the 80s and 90s and should probably stick to the serious epic Oscar-bait movies from now on. I'd also like to see Bird, Abrams or Snyder considered for Justice League.
i think Lucas will stay on as a creative consultant. i think JJ is a bad idea. hes already working on all the Star Trek reboots, granted the 2nd hasnt come out yet, but, come on, you know therell be more. i always saw it as either Star Trek or Star Wars. kind of a conflict of interest in doing both. i think thats why Singers Superman sucked so bad. going from one comic powerhouse to another, not good, imo. would love to see Snyder stick with the superhero stuff, i think hed be a solid JL director, but, i think that movies gonna suck anyways. as far as SW goes, im thinking that Disney should go with someone thats done well for them in the past. i dont know why Verbinski or Columbus havent been brought into the fold. all the POTC and HP stuff is amazing and with all the digital effects used, theyd be great directors for at least one of the upcoming SW films. i think an Aronofsky SW may be too dark for disney, but, they do own Miramax and have been known to back risque films. not sure theyll take that chance with a mega powerhouse franchise like SW though. too bad.

They'll make the same mistake they made with Indiana Jones. They took too long, passing over great stories only to force themselves into a corner and need to make compromises to justify the age of the cast in the script.

Give it to Pixar and Brad Bird. That way the original cast can lend their voices without having to be 60-70 years old and embarassing themselves on screen.

Well, they went with a guy that has history with Disney, not a surprise to me. Wonder if the director will be the same. I keep saying Verbinski.

The return of Darth Vader rumour is clearly a made up story by Express.co.uk and many sites soon will be running with it.

Why Joe Johnston Should Direct 'Star Wars: Episode VII' | Movie News | Movies.com
Some good valid points and now I'm wondering why Joe Johnston wasn't mentioned in the directors list for Star Wars: Episode VII until now.

Agreed, plus I think that some of the directors names being tossed around were ridiculous anyway. Guys that had no business doing a Star Wars flick, IMO. It's like everybody took the top six names in the industry and said, "yeah one of these guys!"
