What was your best deal on an expensive comic?
I put this over in Zog's but would like to see what everyone here has done.
Mine would be Giant Sized X-Men 1 in VG-F condition. Purchased at a show in 1993 for 1/2 cover pice.
Also, years back I webnt to check out a comic collection. It was crap. They guy said he had some baseball cards from the 60s which had all the stars picked out of it. I gave him $20 without looking at them. Sure enough, the baseball cards - while old - had little value due to the cherry picking. However, there was about $2,000 worth of basketabll and football cards, including 2 OJ Simpson rookies. I traded the cards for some comics.

I bought Sub-Mariner #1 (1968) in VG-F condition back in 1987 for $6. It was my proudest moment in collecting comics, and it's all been downhill from there.

I got a VF FF48 for $100 and the ebay seller threw in a matching FF49 in for free because I was his first sale.

Back in the mid 80s, I bought a solid VF Amazing Spidey #1 for $1000.
While I did feel like that was a lot for what is probably a more common book that people realize, it turned out to be a great investment as it's likely worth 20 times that now.
Around the same time, I bought a complete though ratty Amazing Fantasy 15 for 120$. While that's my poorest condition silver age book, I always get a chill when I pick it up. There's something about that book that is truly magical, regardless of the condition. Whenever I show it to people, they seem to get the same chill.
I also bought high grade Hulk 2-5 for $300 during a crazy LCS sale in the mid 80s. I've never seen better condition copies of those books.

Got Hulk 181 for $40 years ago
Got ASM 129 in an eBay lot of about 15 comics that wasn't referenced in the title of the auction (think I paid about $80 for all of the books so about $5 if you average them)
Pulled a 1959 Mickey Mantle card out of a garage sale for a nickle (nice condition too)
The spidey was recent while the other were several years ago

A few years ago I got an outstanding copy of Hulk #181 for just under $400. Wound up selling it for $1500.
