I think a lot of people would agree with you on that. For me they're really close but I give a slight edge to ALIENS for its depth, scope and ability to expand and improve upon what is arguably a masterpiece. I can only think of two other sequels in history that have done that, those being The Empire Strikes Back and The Godfather II.

What about Superman II? Though they were filmed concurrently (more or less) I think it expanded and improved on the first film.

The difference for me... while I think Superman II is the better of the 2 films and did expand/improve upon it's predecessor, the original Superman is not a masterpiece.

While I enjoyed Aliens alot its really made for the American audience since they went with US Marines in space. I much more prefers the claustrophobic and horror feel of the first than the ra ra ra US Marines of Aliens.
