I buy what i like based on my own views.
Sometimes i have been influenced by YouTube video's, as those comments are based on what the presenter can see with their own (presumably) two eyes, rather than simply looking at an image on a screen. For me to be watching the video usually means i have an interest in the piece in the first place.

The only time I really bought into the hype was for the Thanos maquette. Not that I didn't love it and plan on getting it but I wasn't going to order it right away.
If I didn't buy in I would have missed the EX for sure so it worked out for me.

I really takes awhile for me to decide if I will get a statue, which with the current delays helps. But some pieces get better with time and others seem to get worse. I rotate my display pieces and it keeps things fresh so I don’t get too bored looking at the same ones all the time.

I don't think I've been too swayed by hype or negativity. I know what I like and what my collecting focus is. At this point there is only one statue that I regret NOT buying. I kind of regret buying the Tweeterhead Super Powers stuff I have, but at least I was able to experience them in hand and I should be able to get most or all of my $$ back if I sell them.
The three problems I have are:
1. Buying something that is just "okay" in order to complete a team/line.
2. Getting overly hyped by seeing really great pics of pieces in lighting, settings, and saturation levels that look amazing in pictures but don't represent what it would actually look like in my room.
3. Getting hyped up about small scale stuff in the moment and buying up a bunch of stuff very quickly and then selling it all off again in a year. It's like a quick high that I shouldn't be doing.

I have never been swayed to not buy something I really like or love. I have probably gotten caught up in hype of something and bought due to FOMO but never to buy something I didn't at least like a lot. I learned a long time ago to only buy for enjoyment. If you start buying for other reasons like ROI, what other people think ... you end up with a collection you probably don't enjoy.

Started to heavily consider collecting in '08. And it took me a while of what I wanted my final collection to look like. So I had to sell off a good bit and decided to only focus on a certain genre and not to deviate. Helps me save money and I'm happy how things are now. There are way too statues coming out now and I would never be able to keep up if I kep buying everything in sight. Plus the price as triple over the years so collecting is way hard then it was when 1/4 scale was around $350-400 max.

I got that based on the proto too. Everything else is great though.
I do get tempted especially if I’m revisiting old books or movies and I see a piece based on those characters but I don’t have much space to display my collection and I use that as an excuse to not dive in.

I only buy what I really like, really want and can afford,
The only time someone else's opinion swayed me was after watching DGK's review of Kier death's warbringer, I was on the fence and after watching immediately ordered her...and she's amazing, so thanks DGK
don't take this the wrong way but I won't be watching any more of your reviews though...I can't afford too.
