So I've never bought one of these are pieces. Is sideshow's framing of the art worth it or is it cheaper to do it on your own?

It depends whether or not you want something specific for a frame really. In my opinion, sideshow does a good job. Ive bought a custom frame for art, you get better glass, your choice of frame, bordering etc. Getting your own frame done, is about the same cost of having sideshow frame. For me, having the frame done custom is more of a hassle. I rather get sideshows frame. On a sidenote, every artpiece ive purchased with the frame has been a low numbered 7/200, 15/200, 5/200 etc.

If you are fine with normal (standard) glass, and average quality frames and the inability to choose your mats, then yes. They are pretty convenient too because you open the box and it's already ready to hang.
If you want your piece to have Museum glass, or you want to choose your own framing and matting, then no it's not worth it. This is the more cumbersome option, but gives you a lot more flexibility.

I love the framed option. Saves me the hassle, and I think they look good. Not referring to quality, but aesthetically, I have yet to see any of the custom frames look better than the ones Sideshow does. That's not to say they're not out there, but I haven't seen them personally. I have a half dozen or so Sideshow frames, and I have some that I've spent 300 getting framed. The SS ones fit in just fine!
